First NASA program to put the first American astronauts in space. 7 astronauts made 6 space flights for the project mercury. Four of the space flights went into orbit and circled the earth, and the other two reached space and came back down The first flights were in 1961 and the last flight was in 1963.Their goal was to put a man into earth orbit and return him safely. This project was important because it was a way to learn how to safely put astronauts in orbit around earth, how they could live and work in space, it was a lesson they would put into work in other lessons.

Russian cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin became the first human in space. His vehicle, Vostok 1 circled earth at the speed of 27,400 kilometers per hour with the flight lasting 108 minutes. During the flight the 27 year old test pilot and industrial technician also became the first men to orbit the planet.

On June 16, 1963, astronaut Valentina Tereshkova from the Soviet Union was the first woman in space. She completed 48 orbits in 71 hours aboard Vostok 6. Before, Valentina was an amatuer parachutist that was choosen from four female cosmonaut finalists. She was described as “Gagarin in a skirt” by Nikolai Kamanin, the director of cosmonaut training and deputy chief of the air force. Which itself is referring to Gagarin, the first human in space. The have beaten America yet again by having the first woman in space and having her out longer than any U.S astronaut. Valentina was given the title hero of the Soviet Union. Although Valentina never to space again, she became a spokesperson for her country.

The first 3 astronauts to fly to the moon. The flight consisted of a day orbiting the moon, it was during this that the astronauts took a earthrise picture. It took 68 hours to travel the distance to the moon. The goal of the mission was to demonstrate command and service module performance in a cislunar (between the Earth and Moon) and lunar-orbit environment. This was important because in order to actually land in the moon they had to know the flight trajectory and operations to get there and come back.

The Hubble telescope was created to get a closer look at our star system, other galaxies, and different stars. The reason that this telescope is so good is because it has the ability to focus all the light on the object you are looking at. The Hubble is a telescope that orbits Earth in order to get sharp images of planets and stars. Nasa says that they have made over one million observations using the Hubble telescope.

The astronauts use this place to research physics, biology, astronomy, and meteorology. This imposter satellite orbits around the earth just like any other satellite. The bulk of the design was by the US and Russia.

The Kepler telescope is a instrument designed to explore our milky way galaxy. It's design to find earth size o even smaller planets that are orbiting in our galaxy. It collected information for Scientifics that helped understand our position in the cosmos. It found a galaxy filled with planets even more than the stars in it. The Kepler orbit nine years the space and discover a lot of new things, and lastly it was named after astronomer Johannes Kepler.
