The primary structure of protein is determined by a sequence of amino acids in a chain. There are several different types of amino acids (20) that can form 'stepping stones' along the chain. Amino acid sequences vary between different proteins.

The secondary structure of protein is formed by hydrogen atoms attract oxygen atoms, the amino acid primary structure folds into a pleated sheet or twist into a helix.

The tertiary structure forms as the unqiue side group of each amino acid give it characteristics that attract or repel surrounding fluids or other amino acids, resulting in different shapes.

The quarternary structure is a protein consisting of more than one amino acid chain.
