There were many colonists that arrived here, including prisoners who were sent to the Americas as a punishment. Tobacco was farmed, and they went to war with Native Americans to maintain their territory and cut them off of their land. Native Americans were forced to run and find other places. However, this was mainly among the rich people. The poorer people did not own land and they rebelled. A Key event includes Bacon's Rebellion, which was an uprising against the governor and the rich landowners by the poorer white people. These people wanted harsh punishment against the Native Americans so that they could have more land.
