Before Hadrian's Wall, Vindolanda became an important construction and garrison base for the wall.
Layout: Outside the fort walls, space had be allocated for military structures - store houses, workshops temples an official guest house or mansio, cemetaries and the great military bath-house.
Dates: AD160-200. Vindolanda gets its first stone fort - garrison unknown - possibly North African
-AD200-212. A smaller base is built over the old town and the old fort site is covered with circular huts making a new native style town at Vindolanda
-AD274-280. Vindolanda is abandoned, the town is derelict and the fort granaries are torn down and made useless
-AD300-410. Vindolanda stone fort is rebuilt, smaller community moves inside the walls of the last fort, no longer uses the town outside the walls.
-One of the most important Roman military sites in the Empire.
-The documented writing tablets found are entirely from a military perspective (Some official, others from individual soldiers
-Vindolanda can be translated to mean 'white field or white moor'. - Roman forts was likely built upon a farmer's field.
