One common way slaves were punished is with a whip. This form of punishment would be used when the slave was caught sneaking out or doing something they were not supposed to do. And most times the master/slave owner or the overseer would do this for fun and for personal amusement.
In this picture, we see how many times this man was whipped, and how painful it looks.
In this link, it gives more information and background on how and all the different ways slaves were punished.

https://spartacus-educational.com/USASpunishments.htm

This link is mostly the reasons on why slaves were punished. But it also involves how they would resist or how big the fears of running away were.
The slaves would try to run away but the risks were high. Most of them could not read nor right and had very few limited sources or connections that could help them escape from where they were (virginia). Without any help, the risk was higher, they would risk their lives dying from starvation or any exposure as they traveled a great distance by foot only. This link gives more information on how and the risks of them running away would be.

https://www.mountvernon.org/george-washington/slavery/resistance-and-punishment/

In the book of Fredrick Douglass, he describes how he eye witnessed the deaths of many. He describes how some slaves were brutally murdered without any type of justice at the end.
Many died for no reason at all, others because they spoke at the wrong time or said something to the wrong person. Fredrick Douglass writes that most of the slaves were murdered, beat, or abused of by the overseers or masters (the managers of the plantation). For more information the link down below has quotes and other things that can also be found in the book.

https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=&ved=2ahUKEwjRhfP4qaL0AhWNlGoFHYF8CQ0QFnoECA0QAQ&url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.history.com%2Ftopics%2Fblack-history%2Ffrederick-douglass&usg=AOvVaw0iDbedUL_fOc8SEepi25yX
