    1) Peer mentorships - seat students with other students that also share the same first language so that they can support the ELL student

    2) Incorporate texts in multiple languages -

    3) Use visual clues

    4) Give extra time for processing of English Language

    5) Build in time to learn cultural capital

    6) Use subtitles if/when you are watching videos (for visual/language connections)

    7) Have a scaffolding sheet taped to their desk with key words - to help process instructions faster

    8) Give students a translated version of lessons

    By ensuring that the school has practices in place for welcoming newly arrived English language learners and their families, we can foster an inclusive environment for all students.


    If possible, the administration can hire interpreters that are familiar with the community's languages - in concert with a volunteer team (consisting of both educators and students) that recognize the diversity of the student body in school events and messaging.


    We can also encourage involvement of newcomer/immigrant parents in school events and the parent council by sharing newsletters in their language.

  • allow for use of translators in all subjects where knowledge of English is not what is being assessed

    • modify teaching and assessment of English language for the emerging bilinguals

  • provide extra support where needed

  • speak slowly, clear gestures

  • create relevant connections to the student's life in the work

  • have lessons be both visual and verbal

  • have all students practice the foundations of language alongside the emerging bilingual as it is always valuable, especially in primary settings

  • As teachers we must recognize that “Second-language learners do not in any case have the time to study English as a “subject” before they use it to learn other things; they must begin to use it as a medium for learning as soon as they enter school” (p. 49), and support emerging bilinguals accordingly
