In the Odyssey, Poseidon appears as the main antagonist. Odysseus, after invading a cave, faces Polyphemus, which is Poseidon's son. Odysseus blinds the cyclops, which enrages Poseidon. According to Ancientliterature.com, Polyphemus "begs Poseidon to have Odysseus’ journey end, never reach Ithaca, or derail his journey for several years". In turn, Poseidon develops a deep vengeance towards Odysseus; and uses storms to derail the hero's journey back home and sends sea monsters to attack him. However, a violent storm sends Odysseus' ship onto the Phaecian island. The Phaecians pity Odysseus, and their patron, Poseidon, is forced to oblige to them, sending Odysseus home. This ends the conflict between Poseidon and Odysseus.

Poseidon represented many things for the Greeks. Being god of the sea, storms, earthquakes, fertility, navigation, and horses. He was worshiped to help boats navigate through the seas and have calm waters lost. He was also worshiped partially for fertility and to help prosper with lakes, rivers, or springs. Throughout Greek literature, Poseidon aided sailors on their voyages, and rescued sailors in peril. He is associated with sailors and fisherman, and is regarded as the 2nd most powerful Greek God.

Poseidon is the Greek God of the sea and storms. Not only that, but Poseidon was connected to things like fertility, horses, earthquakes, and navigation. His name means "husband of the earth" or "lord of the earth".He is the brother of Zeus, god of thunder, and Hades, god of the Underworld. He is the son of Cronus and Rhea. He carries a three-pronged trident made by the cyclops and with it, can create large earthquakes, earning the title of "Earth-Shaker". He was infamously known to be a vengeful and moody god, and was only known to be kind and caring when he was content with his surroundings. He had many children, notably the flying horse Pegasus; Triton, the half-fish half-man; Orion; Polyphemus, the cyclops; and many others. He had a major role in guiding the Greeks in The Illiad, but was known to be a major antagonist to Odysseus in The Odyssey.
