Part 1 Concept: Culture

Culture is language, beliefs, values, norms, behaviors, and material objects that people obtain through integration in a specific group or society. This image represents me, my mom and dad celebrating Holi, which is one of the most popular festivals celebrated by Hindus. We are wearing bright colors to represent Holi, since it is the festival of colors and joy. This image connects to the concept because me and my parents are celebrating Holi, which is a part of our culture. I chose this image because it is a literal representation of culture.

Part 1 Concept: Symbols

A symbol is something to which people attach a denotation and that is used to communicate. I took this image in December 2023, when my dad got me a Tesla for Christmas. We took it to the temple, as most Hindus take their new cars to the temple. The priest drew a Swastika right above the "T". The Swastika may be associated with the Nazi symbol, however, the symbol originated from Hindus, and it means "good fortune". This image is a great representation of a symbol because there is a literal symbol drawn on my car (the Swastika is not permanent, it got washed off by the rain eventually).

Part 1 Concept: Norms

Norms are unwritten rules of behavior that form out of a group's values. This image illustrates me and my friends at a Halloween party. This is a great example of a norm because at Halloween parties, wearing a Halloween costume is a norm. The girl on the very left is dressed as a police officer, the girl next to her is dressed as a cat, I am dressed as a SWAT officer, and the girl on the very right is dressed up as a military officer. This image is a representative idea of the concept of a norm, and I chose it because wearing costumes at Halloween parties is a very common norm that most people follow.

Part 2 Quest #4: Image

This image shows a woman's hands decorated in Henna. It is a great example of the concept culture. Wearing henna is culturally significant for Southern Asian women, and it is very unique and exclusive to their culture. Henna is a black dye made of dried henna plant leaves that women, usually in South Asian countries, decorate their hands with. Wearing henna is especially common for women when they are getting married.

Part 1 Concept: Gender

This image represents the concept of gender. Gender is a learned/socialized identity. I took this image at a party; all of the people standing in the picture identify as women, besides the one tall man standing in the back. People would assume that they are all women since they are wearing feminine clothing, have their nails and hair styled. These are feminine characteristics. Sex and gender are two different things, which is why I am referring to these people as women and not females, since I am not 100% sure they are biologically female; perhaps a few of them were biologically male at birth and are now transgender women. Obviously, I didn't ask them that, but I can confidently say that they are all women.

Part 2 Quest #19: Image

This image depicts a high school with lots of flowers placed at the front. It is a good example of the concept crime, which is the violation of norms that have been written by law. The meaning behind this image implies that there was a school shooting at this high school, and people are putting down flowers to represent the loss of their beloved family members who were unlawfully killed. School shootings are a crime, therefore this image represents that concept. People would interact with this image with sympathy, as losing a loved one is a terrible experience to go through. These flowers laid in the image are there to represent the high schoolers who were shot and killed by 19 year old Nikolas Cruz.

Part 2 Quest # 7: Image

This image illustrates a collage of six women who seem to be active political leaders. It is an eminent example of the concept feminism. All of these six women are powerful and influential, showing us that women can take on these unconquerable roles that were initially designated for men. Women benefit from this as they would be inspired from this image to take on such vigorous roles. Men would not benefit from this image as it stirs up feminism, and competition for men to acquire such jobs would begin to increase as women are also fighting for these indomitable positions.

Part 1 Concept: Racism

Racism is a system of advantage and privilege based on race which consists of a) beliefs and actions of people, b) cultural messages, and c) institutional policies and practices. This image was taken near the Golden 1 Center in Sacramento. These protesters were protesting for equality and representing the Black Lives Matter movement subsequent to the George Floyd incident. This image represents the idea of the concept of racism as these protesters are stirred up with anger due to police brutality towards African Americans. I chose this image as it is a very recent example of racism in our society.

Part 1 Concept: Minority

Minority is a group of people who are treated unfairly and unequally due to a various number of factors such as age, sex, color, ethnicity, and so forth. This image represents all of the Vice Presidents in American history. The most recent vice president, Kamala Harris, is the one who stands out the most. This image is a great representation of minority. Kamala Harris has received intense scrutiny and hate by Americans, especially Republicans, for being a black female. I chose this image to represent this concept as Kamala Harris is a great, recent and relevant example of minority groups in the United States.

Part 1 Concept: Privilege

Privilege is certain social advantages that an individual receives based off of various factors such as age, sex, gender, ethnicity, color, and so forth. This image imitates a white woman walking on a street in India. All of the Indians are staring at her as she is walking past them. This is a phenomenal example of privilege in third world countries, where there are little to no white people. In these countries, people with white skin are looked upon as wealthy, beautiful, intelligent, and superior to others, and they are often treated as celebrities. I chose this image because most people are aware of privilege here in the United States, but they are unaware of the privilege that whites receive even outside of their own country. It is a great and unique example of privilege.
