For this week we formed bands which we wanted to work in to produce 4 songs from different genres and different decades. I was in a group with Simran, Lydia and Yvie which I work well with. I thought it we a good group because we all pitch in ideas for songs and it gives me the change to have a lead input on the music ideas.

For this week we mostly looked and got some ideas of songs we wanted to try out and would most likely do and tried to think of song ideas of lyrics or chords.
After the first hour of ideas we started working on our first song which was a jazz song from the 50's. We decided to use all the usual things you'd expect to hear from olden jazz such as scat singing and jazz chords. We also used a bass as a lot of time in the past jazz would have had a funky bass to keep the beat. Another part of the music which helped to make it jazz was using seventh chords. I personally don't play seventh chords which is why I got the idea to play bass instead.
The music itself was very simple which worked well to show the genre as a lot of olden jazz songs had a few instruments to create a funky backing with scat vocals on top. (scat is making up lyrics that aren't actual words to go along with music which meant in the day anyone could play jazz)

This song didn't go as well as planned, nothing seemed to sound right as we were trying to play. Throughout the lesson we had struggles with playing the song we wanted to play. It was hard to come up with the chords and everything we needed but by the end of the lesson we had a solid idea of were we wanted to take the song and what we wanted to accomplish next week which was to move on and come back to it.

For this song it didn't go very well in the recording and ended up being one of our worst recordings. This was because it was such a complicated song that we needed more time to perfect it. Listening back now the bass also clashed loads which is my fault to the group for trying to be to adventurous. Even though the recording didn't go to well the basic concept of the song was complete and we even worked on it and recorded it on logic.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_KuGxKEnFqo&index=9&list=PLNTlmWoJVMq23ugcp3yx5L0pDJgaIm6Ru

The bass line in this song was a bit more complex than my last one. The piano and guitar chords were C C F G
But on bass that sounded boring so in the intro and chorus i decided to use the bottom string (G) to play a higher octave which gave the song more character.
Bass line i played was the same as the chords but i added in extra notes constantly to keep it sounding fresh.

No woman no cry was a good example to show what we were aiming for as it was a catchy song with powerful reggae vocals.
The song we produced was along the same lines as this song. We decided to use the offbeat guitar to fill in the sound to make it fuller and the lyrics were stereotypical to reggae song, about love in a warm and peaceful environment.

We worked towards writing a ballad from the 70's. It unfortunately however didn't turn out as planned so we dropped it and went onto focusing on our more promising songs. It didn't work because we thought it would be a good idea to use a capo on the guitar and transpose that onto the keyboard. At first it was going alright be it took a while and not all the notes were perfect. For example we transposed one of the notes wrong which ruined the whole song. The chords we ended up with were: C Em G Am but there was no depth to it. The song just didn't seem to work and we didn't like the way it sounded by the end of it so we didn't use it the next week. We also didn't manage to get a recording of it but a recording was not needed.

We started to work on our punk song. We thought it would be best to use influence from the 2000's rather than the 70's or present day because we wanted to achieve a stereo typically old punk song in the simpleness but add in more complex and up to date lyrics. Most punk songs you hear talk about breakups so we thought that would be a good idea to go off.
Because i'm the one who knows punk the most in our group and yvie wasn't there i was left to come up with the music whilst the others helped on the lyrics. I just messed around until i found what felt right but looking back onto it it sounded like another punk song already out which wasn't what we intended (holiday by green day).

For this song i chose to have a massive lead in it due to being the one in the group with most knowledge of punk music. I decided to do guitar and vocals instead of bass. I wanted to input vocals because out of the group i have a really punk sounding voice which was able to produce a powerful chorus. However in the final recording of the song when Yvie was singing in the chorus it threw me off and made it hard to concentrate on getting the chorus to sound as powerful as needed.
For guitar i played some random power chords in order to find some which sounded good for our song which didn't take long.
Chords: F# D A C#

I helped to come up with the lyrics for the chorus as that was originally all i was singing. I decided to think of some chiche emo/punk lyrics which were "you break me, you hate me, you made the monster in my head, you break me, you hate me, you are my misery" I thought this was a good idea because older punk songs had simple chords and lyrics with a powerful chorus so i followed that idea for the song and made the chorus sound far different from the rest of the song even though we were only playing the same chords.

As a guitarist i thought it would be best to play guitar for this song as i am able to pick strings to give off a really nice sounding pop song. However it turned out as more of a pop balled rather than a catchy pop song in the end, which shown we were able to link genres together really well.
Because of our influences being mostly focused of the lyrics we decided to do the same and tell a story with them whilst i covered the music side of things.
We managed to get far through through the song and had it sounding up to scratch at the end of the day.

Ed sheran is mostly known for that, as a guitarist i have tried to play many of his songs as they are huge in the music world and for most of them he plays the same few chords in different orders or in a different key. This was a key point in making our song, we wanted to do what Ed Sheran usually does so we looked at some of the chords he plays and transposed and changed them to match the song we wanted to make.
The lyrics were thought of by all of us, we all put in ideas and formed a song about seasons. We looked at Ed Sherans lyrics as he was our main influence and saw he wrote about specific times or places which is where we got the ideas to use seasons.

For this song we kept it the same and it didn't need much work. Only difference was we perfected adding a solo in for Simran and instead of strumming in the second verse i stuck to picking for all of it. Since Yvie missed a lot of the lessons before we got her caught up with the bass line and she played this to fill out the sound.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PKHAnFlKoyA&list=PLNTlmWoJVMq23ugcp3yx5L0pDJgaIm6Ru&index=22

For this song we practiced it in our spare time to bring up to playing standard but listening to the recording it sounded lacking. I would have been nice to implement a drum into it to keep us in time and make it sound better.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z5oS4UBh6Yg&index=24&list=PLNTlmWoJVMq23ugcp3yx5L0pDJgaIm6Ru
