~Ratliff's idea of linking and exclusivity in music~

In the book, "Every Song Ever", the author, Ben Ratliff, defines the linking of music as an "outside of the box parameter" that shape shifts into the logic it withholds and portrays (Ratliff 191). Ratliff reasons with the idea that if you focus on one element within the music, then it will bedevil you. Ratliff gives me the impression to not throw yourself into the music and try to analyze it. Instead, appreciate it for what it is. Music is meant to take control of you, not vice versa. Furthermore, Ratliff states "how music is imposed from its core not the outer layers" (Ratliff 190). We think of rhythm and repetitiveness as an absentmindedly boring motion that has to be done. Music does not work this way. It takes every boost of creativity and energy to make something new. Music is something that requires new perspectives and thought to be sought out as successful and original.

As Ratliff in his book, this song is a great representation of this idea of linking in music. This song brings the listener in and takes away the audience's power to "determine if they can understand the language" (Ratliff 196). This song takes away the listener's ability to predict what will come next. This is what I really like about the piece, it keeps you on your toes.

Ocean waves exemplify this idea of rhythm and linking by its consistency. The ocean waves are always coming and going, but what differentiates the waves from each other is what stops them. Sometimes, the waves make it all the way to shore. On the other hand, sometime they are stopped by a riptide or an other environmental factor. Similar to Ratliff's statement about the music taking control of the listener, this portrays that the waves cannot take control of what happens to them. Instead, it is what takes control of them determines their fate.

The song, "Mother", by Moglii has a distinct rhythm and melody that exemplifies this idea of linking and exclusivity. The first part of the song has a unpredictable beat that is hard to follow. You have to let the music engulf you. All you have to do is sit and listen.
