The Function of the Heart

The main function of the heart is to pump blood around the body.
To achieve a Merit or distinction grade you also need to explain the flow of blood through the heart (e.g. oxygenated blood from the lungs enters the heart through the pulmonary vein into the left atrium, it then flows through a valve into the left ventricle. The job of the left ventricle is to squeeze and push blood into the aorta....). the explain which artery is the exception to the rule (and carries deoxygenated blood), which vein is the exception (and carries oxygenated blood), and explain why the heart has valves and explain why the left ventricle has thicker, more muscular walls.

It also shows which artery and vein are the exception to the rule (look for a vein carrying oxygenated blood shown in red and an artery carrying deoxygenated blood shown in blue).
