Math Lesson Strategies

Allow students to use desk copies of math facts or “cheat sheets”

Provide models of sample problems and permit the student to use these models as a reference when solving problems in class

Language Arts Lesson Strategies

Start each project with a simple note system. Give student the freedom to take their own notes and review them together if possible.

Since accomplishing a five-page essay takes a lot of time, you can chop it into smaller, easier-to-manage pieces that can be worked on in rotation. Each piece may be checked separately if time allows.

Social Studies Lesson Strategies

Use role playing to help student with ADD and ADHD make connections between what they learn and real-life experiences when teaching social studies. Give the ADD or ADHD student, studying social studies short scenes of 5 to 10 minutes.

Teach student to take notes in a graphic organizer. Student can write vocabulary words or terms they need to know for the lesson on the tabs and write brief definitions and create illustrations on the graphic organizer.

Science Lesson Strategies

Give these students a worksheet or a topic that allows each to work by himself.

Talk with students about their personal experiences with anatomy, physics, and chemistry. Ask a student to tell you what happens when she has a physical or what the doctor is checking when she has an eye exam or a hearing exam.

Math Testing Strategies

Copy down each problem on scrap paper. Write out the problem slowly, number the steps, and double-check what you’ve written.

Write big and bold. This will allow you to see a mistake, keep from confusing numbers, letters, or signs, and give your brain room to think.

Language Arts Testing Strategies

Answer the simple questions first. This builds momentum. If you start with the difficult questions, you may linger and run out of time for the easier ones.

Create a rough draft. Consider drawing out an answer or jotting down a list of sentences on scratch paper (intro point, key points, conclusion) before writing your answer on the exam.

Social Studies Testing Strategies

Star or dash questions that you need help with, then you can come back to them at the end.

Write down all dates and names that you can remember and need to know on the test, at the beginning of the testing period

Science Testing Strategies

Music, especially classical, tends to calm students, especially while testing over difficult topics

Separate these students so they can talk out loud about the test and speak their way through it
