I do believe that laws are to some extent a bit slow to deal with issues regarding technology these days. For example, online infringement or disclosing of trade secrets to someone through a qualified person such as an employee used to work in a company. FOI can basically assist by protecting this information, applying penalties etc… though it is challenging.

Where a person donates tissue for genetic testing for diagnostics and research, this may be used for research where samples are de-identified and consent (or ethical waiver) for use is obtained. That is, privacy laws theoretically do not apply. But the .1% of a person's genetic information that is unique to you is always enough to identify you. This is the basis of genetic genealogy (or investigative genetic genealogy). This means that genetic information in tissue samples for research purposes is always identifiable.

Due to Aus' lax privacy laws, I worry that big companies (Meta, Google, the Big 4 Banks) will lobby against tightening privacy laws in the Privacy Act Review (as has already been noted in meetings with A-G). This will essentially allows those companies to carry out adverse practices in Australia that have been outlawed in other countries. See eg Operation Ironside.

With increasing developments in Virtual Reality and Augmented Reality as well as Facebook's future development of the Metaverse, I worry about the implications that these technological developments will have on people's privacy. With the establishment of the metaverse imminent, privacy laws need to be equipped to deal with the level of societal harm and individual privacy violations that mixed reality technologies may cause.
