         <description><![CDATA[<div>The American Party, previously known as the Native American Party was an American nativist political party that opposed immigrants, especially Roman Catholics. Members were to reply, "I know nothing" when asked about the specifics of the organization, giving them their commonly used name, the Know Nothing Party.<br><br>The Know Nothing Party became popular in the 1850s and 43 members of the Congress in 1855 were also Know Nothing members.<br><br><strong>Significance</strong>: Immigrants were faced with harder requirements to gain citizenship. In addition, Immigration restrictions were placed and immigrants were restricted from voting and taking public office positions.</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>In the 1840s, the potato crop crisis in Ireland and economic hardships for German peasants sparked mass migration to Northeast US by 1850. There were 200,000 Irish and 110,000 German immigrants in New York City.<br><br>Neighborhoods were filled with German shops, foods, and customs, which became part of the city's culture. The Irish found allies in the Catholic Church, which soon became dominated by the Irish, and the Democratic Party, which allowed them to control the political development.<br><br><strong>Significance</strong>: The ethnically diverse migrants altered New York City's culture which alarmed native-born New Yorkers. These activists organized the nativist movement which worked to halt immigration and repress foreign residents.</div>]]></description>

         <title>NY Anti-Immigrant Gangs - Alex</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>The NY Anti-Immigrant Gangs were created in response to the rising numbers of migrants, which lead to an altered culture in New York.<br><br> In the beginning of the 1830's, nativists called for a halt to immigration and performed political and cultural assault on foreign born residents.  <br><br>Gangs of B'hoys: group who targeted Irish workers<br><br>American Republican Party/Whigs: swept the city elections by focusing on the culturally emotional issues of temperance, anti-Catholicism, and nativism. <br><br><strong>Significance: </strong>Immigrants in New York faced oppression and violence against the Natives because of their cultural differences. The immigrants faced rampant racism from the New Yorkers because of their belief of Catholicism</div>]]></description>
