Summary for chapter 1- The family gets home from church, but Papa is angry because Jaja didn’t participate in communion. Papa threw his leatherbound missal at Jaja, but he missed and hit a glass shelf that held Mama’s ballerina figurines. Before lunch, Jaja prayed, and during lunch, the family tasted one of the new products at Papa’s company. Jaja left the table before the final prayer, which angered Papa. Kimbili drank the juice from her father's company too fast and ended up choking. That night, Kimbili stayed in bed and didn’t eat dinner with her family. Kimbili compares Jaja’s defiance to her Aunty Ifeoma’s experimental purple hibiscus.

During family time on a Saturday, it was announced on the radio that the coup happened. Papa wasn’t happy about the coup, because of the bloody coups that happened in the 60s. Papa then talked about how Nigeria needed a renewed democracy.

Summary for chapter 3- The coup is still going on at this point. Mama’s belly is getting bigger as the days go by. A visiting priest said mass during church, but Papa didn’t like him very much because he didn’t compliment the church, and halfway through, he started singing an Igbo song. The family then visited the priest's house and Mama started feeling sick. The family had lunch, and after lunch, Kimbili heard Papa hurting Mama. He then carried Mama downstairs as she was bleeding and Mama didn’t come home that night. The next day, Mama came home and told everyone the baby was gone. Papa then told Kimbili and Jaja that they had to pray for forgiveness for Mama.

Summary for chapter 4- Yewande comes into the family's house, crying that her husband, Papa’s editor Ade, had been arrested because of his work in the Standard. On the last day of school, Kimbili got her report card, but was very scared for her father to see it because instead of getting first place in the class, she had gotten second place. Once Papa saw Kimbili’s report card, he was disappointed, and had a talk with her about doing better. Papa’s editor, Ade, got released from jail, and papa decided to move his company underground to make sure his workers were safer. Mama, Jaja, and Kimbili went to the market during the school break, and while they were there, they saw soldiers destroying the fruit stalls of women because the stalls were illegal structures. Papa drove Kimbili to school on the first day back and made Kimbili show him her classroom. He also asked Kimbili to show him Chinwe Jideze, the girl who got first, and he told Kimbili to not let Chinwe get first place again. Ezinne, Kimbili’s friend, suggests that Kimbili be more social so Chinwe would stop calling her a “backyard snob.”

When they got to their house in Abba, Ade Coker and his family came to visit them. The family said their morning prayer, and then Kimbili and Jaja went to go visit their Papa-Nnukwu, and Papa said they could only stay with their Papa-Nnukwu for 15 minutes because Papa believed that Papa-Nnukwu was a heathen.

Summary for Chapter 6- Aunty Ifeoma came to visit Kimbili and her family. Aunty Ifeoma convinced Mama to let Kimbili and Jaja go look at the mmuo, but they didn’t tell Papa where they were going because Papa would never approve of his children going to a “heathen festival.” Papa allowed Aunty Ifeoma to take the children sightseeing, not knowing that they would be going to see the mmuo. Kimbili met her cousins, Amaka, Obiora, and Chima for the first time. Kevin drove Kimbili and Jaja to Aunty Ifeoma’s house, and on the way, he bribed a police officer to let them through the road block. When Aunty Ifeoma was taking the kids to go sightseeing, they picked Papa-Nnukwu up on the way to the mmuo festival. Aunty Ifeoma, Kimbili, Jaja, their cousins, and Papa-Nnukwu watched the mmuo festival and then returned home.

Summary for Chapter 7- On Christmas day, Kimbili and her family went to church. After church, the family went to fund-raiser in the multipurpose hall. Kimbili and her family return home as well Aunty Ifeoma and her family. Igwe then visited Kimbili’s home. Kimbili then overheard her Mama and Aunty Ifeoma talking about Eugine, Kimbili’s Papa, and how he treated Aunty Ifeoma and why he didn’t get along with Ifediora. The family then has dinner together and Aunty Ifeoma convinces Papa to let Jaja and Kimbili visit them in Nsukka. Papa beat Jaja, Mama, and Kimbili with the belt because he caught Kimbili breaking the Eucharistic fast by eating before mass. Kimbili and her family left Abba after New Year's, and on their way back, they encountered a bad car accident, and seeing the man who got killed had a big impact on Kimbili. Kimbili and her family then went to confession at Father Bennedict’s house. Kimbili and Jaja go to visit their Aunty Ifeoma, and they are nervous because they have never spent more than a day away from their father.
