1. I am feeling tired
2. I think that the concept of race originated when there were people that have different skin colors and from different places.

Video 1 Notes

There are three main layers of skin(The dermis protects the tissue from being pulled apart.)(Hipodermis is made of adipose tissue)

Skin color works by keratinocytes are cells that make up 90% of your skin. The bottom layer is stratum basale. Melanocytes live under the epidermis. The skin pigment is made up in the epidermis(Epidermis is the outside layer). One melanocyte can contact 30 other cells. Everyone has 8% melanocytes regardless of your skin color.

The thing that is responsible for creating the variation in skin color in all humans is the baseline color is the skin that doesn't get sun. People with dark skin, their melanocyte cells are more active and they are producing more keratinocytes. Melanin is protective and it protects us from UV light from the sun. People with lighter skin aren't as active and are at greater risk from cancer.

One interesting fact I learned was that everyone has %8 melanocytes.

Some of the earliest definitions of race were considered a kinship or group affiliation. Which means part of the same family/group. Some immigrants could not pay to come so they would sign a contract saying that they will offer there work to stay and pay there debt. We saw the shift in the idea of race in the 17th and 8th century was by the rise of capitalism and the enlightenment. The difference between Indentured Servitude and Enslavement in the U.S was a contract to an agreement that would eventually end. slaves was for life, slaves were not considered human, No contract, and slavery was hereditary.
