Cutout animation is a form of stop-motion animation using flat characters, props and backgrounds cut from materials such as paper, card, stiff fabric or even photographs.

The animator can use a single drawing, cut into pieces, to represent movement that would otherwise require hundreds of cels.

Disadvantages - 2-D shapes make smooth, fluid movement -- particularly movement toward or away from the camera -- difficult to achieve. Any detail applied to a cut-out shape limits the angle at which an animator can take a picture of it. Similarly, cut-out animation doesn't work well for facial close-ups, so dialogue that requires the lip movements of a character to be synchronized with recorded sound -- lip-sync -- is rare. Cut-out animation is typically used for mimed stories with duration of five minutes or less.

What is it?
Drawn animation or drawn on film animation is is an animation technique where images are directly drawn directly onto a film stock.
History
The first traditional animated short film was had drawn by a french artist Emile Cohl. The film was stick figures running into morphing objects. Cohl made the film by drawing each frame on a piece of paper and shooting it on film. There are a few scenes in the film where Cohl’s hands are visible while taking the photograph.
Pro's and Con's
The advantages of using drawn animation is that there is no technology needed to make it which makes it cheap. However, it requires a lot of workers and patience.
What is Cel?
A cel (celluloid) is a transparent sheet on which objects are drawn for hand drawn animation.
