As a member of the Fair Wear Foundation, it traces most of its supply chain and ensures payment of a living wage throughout their supply chain, including auditing their suppliers all the way through the last stage of production. This shirt costs about $24, which is similar to a shirt offered by Target for $20. Personally, I believe that the price difference is worth it given the stark difference in their treatment of people and the planet, but I can understand how people who are more constrained by a budget would not be as willing to pay the 20% increase. Although the price difference is definitely not negligible, the fact that “there are more than 30 million people living in slavery in the world” shows that the consumer decision is not restricted to just price. This brand manufactures locally to reduce its carbon footprint. Its use of eco-friendly materials limits the amount of water used in production. It has a good labor rating as it ensures payment of a living wage in most of its supply chain. Its entire product range is also vegan. It is somewhat on the expensive side, but compared to similar brands cost wise, such as Aritzia, it is worth it. Aritzia’s products are priced similarly but its rating is much lower.

Outland denim works to change the industry by using eco-friendly materials and non toxic materials. They incorporate global organization textile standard cotton in their items along with non-toxic dyes in all of their products. On top of this, they employ women who have been trafficked in Cambodia which gives them the reassurance of a living wage. For the animal rating, they got a 4/5 simply because they do not use animal products but haven’t stated if they’re vegan. On the other hand, H&M are not eco-friendly and operate under an unsustainable company. With their “conscious collection” it was proven that they actually used a higher amount of damaging synthetic materials. A quote that stood out to me was by Demond tutu who said, “we will only be truly free when those in bondage are finally free.” This resonates with me as I agree that we will never be truly free of guilt when there are people across the world suffering the effects of our actions.

Pricing wise, the products are a bit more on the expensive side but I would still recommend buying it for the bigger benefit on the environment and the world.

The cost of consumer actions is more than the cost of the products, as we have an ethical responsibility to uphold the freedom and rights of everyone. It is not  the monetary cost, but the human cost that we must consider in our choices. Consumers should make morally correct choices when making such decisions.

The Common Good is a great website as it sells items with eco-friendly materials made by workers that have rights. It also does not use animal products. I really enjoy the aesthetic and the designs of this company’s products but the price is far out of reach. This is why I would probably buy a normal 30-40 dollar crew neck instead of paying 115. Comparing to popular brands such as Urban Outfitter’s and PACSUN who’s graphic tee’s usually have a price of around $30-60, a STORY mfg. graphic tee is priced at $88 (even at a good sale price). The higher price is worth it as this brand has vegan and organic products as well as all of their products are handmade which lowers its impact on climate change significantly.
