Appropriate technology is a technology which is small-scale, affordable by locals, energy-efficient, and environmentally friendly. The technology is usually needed in developing countries such as Philippines, Bangladesh, Cambodia, etc. Using an appropriate technology, locals should be able to produce the energy by themselves constantly.

MY OPINION ABOUT APPROPRIATE TECHNOLOGY
I think appropriate technology gives an opportunity to live much more convenient life especially to people in developing countries. Some products using the technology are very useful and affordable for everyone, so they should be provided to more people.

Can radio was invented because developing countries such as Indonesia didn't have enough life lines (information network for survival). Natural disaster occurs frequently in Indonesia. Because it also has low literacy rate, people couldn't read news papers either. Therefore Natives were exposed to natural disasters vulnerably. Victor Papanek invented affordable radio out of tin can, and it is powered by animal excrement. It costs about 1000 won.

The reason I think this technology is important

Because developing countries have low literacy rate and usually more dangerous compared to developed countries, Having lifelines like radio is important . Also, Those lifelines should be affordable to the residents. Therefore I think can radio is an important invention.

Can Radio, made of discarded cans, is powered by thermoelectric power.
Thermoelectric power is created when two different metals combine to form a circuit, and when the temperature changes, a current flows.

1. Wrap a wire at the entrance of the can and connect the cable and antenna with electric wires to form a circuit.
2. When the material is placed in the can and lit, a current is generated due to the temperature difference between the can and the wire to receive radio waves.

Any combustible material, such as wax, paper, or wood, can be an energy source because heat is used to make the current flow.
In addition, anyone can make a can radio if they can only get ingredients because the manufacturing cost is only 9 cents.
