The author mainly shows the perspectives and feelings of other characters through the use of dialogue and interactions between the characters. For example, we can tell that John does not see the severity of the narrator's mental issues through the way he repeatedly laughs off her requests to get rid of the wallpaper.

When the narrator interacts or describes the other characters, she is giving the reader the others' emotions (how she perceives them.) Of course it may not be accurate, but it's a strategy used in first-person writing to work past the limitations of one singular point of view.

This would have been different if written in the third person because the suspense and end of the story would have been revealed. There wouldn't be wondering about who is behind the wallpaper because the POV would already show and reveal that.

it could have been a more detailed point of view, but it wouldn't have felt as authentic as it did coming from the mind of the character herself. Having a third-person-point of view would help the reader get a very detailed description of the character's actions when in this state, but not the character's own personal beliefs and feelings.
