Technology, including artificial intelligence, has the potential to considerably improve teaching practices in a number of ways. One of the main benefits of technology in education is the ability to provide personalised learning experiences for students. With AI, teachers can use data analysis to track students' progress and identify areas where they may need additional support or challenge. This allows for personalised instruction that meets the individual needs of each student, promoting a more inclusive and effective learning environment.
Another way in which technology improves teaching practices is through the use of interactive and immersive learning experiences. Virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) technologies can transport students to different time periods, geographical locations or even microscopic worlds, allowing them to interact with content in a more practical and experiential way. This not only makes learning more engaging and enjoyable for students, but also helps them understand and retain information better.
In addition, technology can facilitate collaboration and communication between students and teachers. Online platforms and tools offer students the opportunity to work together on projects, share ideas and receive feedback from their peers and teachers.
This promotes critical thinking, problem-solving skills and teamwork, which are essential in today's interconnected world.
In addition, technology can complement traditional teaching methods by providing access to a wide variety of educational resources. Online platforms, digital textbooks and educational apps give students access to a wide range of materials, including videos, interactive simulations and online quizzes. This allows students to explore topics in more depth and at their own pace, while providing teachers with additional resources to improve their lessons.

Formative assessment is carried out in Art mostly by partial checks and classroom observations. But AI can still help to find patterns and automate parts of assessment.

AI is well-suited for formative assessment as it can offer individualized feedback on specific content. I think individualized feedback is the most powerful advantage of AI for assessment. As a teacher, I can only be in one place at a time looking in one direction at a time. In contrast, AI allows for simultaneous individualized feedback for each student. Going one step further, AI has the ability to assess students without disrupting their learning by something called stealth assessment. While students work, AI can quietly collect data in the background such as the time it takes to answer questions, which incorrect strategies they tried before succeeding, etc. and organize them into a dashboard so teachers can use that data to inform what to focus on or clear up the next day in class.

Formative assessment practices and AI (Artificial Intelligence) are two powerful tools that, when combined, have the potential to revolutionize the educational landscape. Here's a short overview of their intersection:

Formative Assessment Practices: Formative assessment is an ongoing, classroom-based process of gathering feedback on students' learning progress. It involves various methods, such as quizzes, discussions, observations, and peer assessments, to help teachers understand what students know and where they need further support. The primary goal of formative assessment is to inform instruction, enabling educators to adapt their teaching strategies to meet students' specific needs. It fosters a student-centered approach, encourages active learning, and empowers learners to take control of their own education.

AI in Education: AI in education refers to the application of artificial intelligence technologies, including machine learning and data analytics, to enhance and optimize the learning experience. AI can personalize learning, providing tailored content and recommendations to individual students, and it can automate administrative tasks, freeing up educators to focus on instruction. AI-powered tools can analyze vast amounts of data to identify patterns, trends, and areas for improvement, offering insights that can benefit both students and teachers.

The Intersection of Formative Assessment and AI: The synergy between formative assessment practices and AI holds great promise for education. AI can significantly amplify the effectiveness of formative assessment by automating the analysis of student performance data, providing instant feedback, and offering personalized learning pathways. AI can identify learning gaps and suggest targeted resources, enabling educators to intervene more precisely and help students progress.

Additionally, AI can help teachers manage the complexity of assessing individual student needs in larger classrooms, making formative assessment more practical and efficient. It also has the potential to reduce bias and increase objectivity in assessments.

In conclusion, the combination of formative assessment practices and AI in education is a powerful alliance. It empowers educators to tailor their teaching methods to individual student needs, fosters a more personalized and engaging learning environment, and ultimately contributes to improved learning outcomes. As technology continues to advance, the integration of formative assessment and AI is likely to play a pivotal role in shaping the future of education.

Regarding artificial intelligence and technology, I think it can be useful in the context of personalizing the learning plan according to the achieved results. For this purpose, online tests such as quizlet, which offers independent feedback, and for example forms or kahoot, which is not even a tool, but still offers feedback on what has been done, can be used.

Assessment can have a much more formative dimension, carried out during the teaching period, rather than taking place at the end, and must be an integrated process. The assessment must be distributed; object-oriented; epistemic, according to the theory and content being transmitted in class; performative; participatory; and differentiated.

It is very important to assess different students in a way that reflects their interests and what they have been doing. It is useless to give the same exam or the same type of task to all students because not all students perform the same. This reminds me of the example of an attempt to test a number of different animals, giving them the same task to perform, where there is a fish, a monkey and an elephant and they will be evaluated through the task of climbing a tree, obviously, that the same test cannot be applied to all students. Therefore, it is important that the methodology used to carry out the Assessment does not ignore the differences… the different types of students we have. In reality, this points to the possibility that one student may be provided with a certain type of content through one medium, while another student may be provided with a different type of content through a different medium, but which equally provides a good means of Assessment, so that students are finally assessed and this is much easier using a specific learning platform that involves AI

And the teachers is the mediator of this exchange.

I still have doubts at what stage of this learning method comes critical thinking and self-reflection, when it is clear that students are following instructions. To me, the teacher is still the main engine behind this.

For younger pupils, I see a great deal of benefit, because they are learning how to pace their work, how to wait for signs, how to be patient and not just "hunt results".

Because I work in secondary school, if my students did not have a previous experience in using formative assessment (and we do struggle with the fact that each primary school is doing it their way), when they arrive in secondary school the motivation to use technology is actually lacking.

What I think is that formative assessment is hugely underrated, even though it can really help teachers adapt their teaching strategies and pace. It is not always easy to stop and use this type of assessment due to various factors, such as the high number of students in each class, their diverse educational needs, and the many ministerial requirements.

In this sense, the key point for an effective and ready-for-use formative assessment through AI tools is a tailor-made approach. Large language models such as Bard or Chat GPT allow each student to get immediate and personalized feedback on their weaknesses and provide useful activities or pieces of advice for remedial work, unburdening teachers of this demanding task

The use of technology, including AI, can significantly enhance the practice of using randomizers to select students for various learning activities in the classroom. Here are several ways in which technology can improve this teaching practice:

Efficiency and Fairness: Randomizers powered by AI can ensure a fair and equitable selection process. They can take into account factors such as the number of times a student has been selected recently to ensure that all students have an equal chance to participate.

Customization: AI can allow for customization of the selection process. Teachers can define specific criteria or rules for selecting students. For example, they can choose to focus on students who have not participated recently or those who are struggling with the material.

Data-Driven Insights: AI can provide data-driven insights into student participation patterns. It can analyse historical data to identify trends, such as which students are consistently engaged and which ones may need more encouragement to participate.

Integration with Classroom Management Systems: AI-powered randomizers can seamlessly integrate with classroom management systems, making it easy for teachers to implement the random selection process. This integration can also help in tracking and recording student participation over time.

Adaptive Randomization: AI can adapt the randomization process based on real-time classroom dynamics. For instance, if a student has just answered a question or participated in an activity, the AI system can avoid selecting them again immediately, ensuring a diverse and engaging classroom experience.

Feedback and Assessment: AI can collect and analyse data on student participation and performance during various learning activities. This information can be used to provide feedback to both teachers and students. For example, if a student was randomly selected to answer a question but struggled with it, the teacher can provide targeted support.

Accessibility and Inclusivity: AI can be used to enhance the inclusivity of the randomization process. It can consider individual student needs and accommodations, ensuring that all students can participate regardless of their abilities.

Engagement and Motivation: AI can contribute to increasing student engagement by gamifying the random selection process. For example, it can use a variety of visual and auditory cues to make the process more exciting and less predictable.

Time Management: AI can help teachers manage their time more efficiently by automating the selection process, allowing them to focus on teaching rather than the logistics of choosing students.

Privacy and Compliance: AI can be designed to adhere to privacy and data protection regulations, ensuring that student data and participation information are handled responsibly and securely.

Overall, the use of AI in randomizing student selection for learning activities can enhance the effectiveness of formative assessment practices by making them more efficient, fair, and data-driven. It can also help teachers foster a more inclusive and engaging classroom environment. However, it's essential to use AI in education with ethical considerations in mind and to ensure that it aligns with educational goals and best practices.

The idea of there being two teachers per class who can communicate and facilitate education is extremely appealing, especially with large classes of students. I wish we had this in our system. Formative assessment done by means of AI can offer instant feedback, which can be important for students if we think of the fast-paced rhythm of the society we live in, important but not crucial.

Being a teacher in a primary school, I strongly believe that formative assessment must be a priority. The two Australian young ladies seemed to be doing an excellent job, which, however, is part of their educational culture and personal mindset. I personally have been trying to apply very similar activities in the primary classes I teach, and the outcome is invaluable. I'd really like to be able to integrate more AI tools for formative assessment in a daily basis but it isn't always very easy to do and I also don't feel very confident with a number of tools as I still cannot thoroughly estimate their pedagogical value in a primary classroom. Kids really enjoy using small whiteboards or exit tickets to "evaluate" their learning although they aren't fully aware they do it when they do it. I'm really looking forward to learning more about using AI tools for formative assessment purposes.

In terms of strategies for formative assessment, I highlight from the video the random selection of students for an activity. This strategy has multiple advantages:
- active participation,
- equal opportunities,
- encourages inclusion,
- foster collaboration between students
and, at the same time, it gives the teacher feedback on student learning.
I would also highlight the collaborative coaching, as it allows feedback between teachers.
I understand that Artificial Intelligence can contribute to a more effective implementation of these strategies in older students (secondary school students), because technology really engages students in tasks. In addition, it gives them timely feedback that teachers are unable to provide given the large number of students they accompany. This does not mean that AI can replace teachers, on the contrary, it is a tool available to them. I believe that teacher and AI should work collaboratively, taking advantage of “timing” from the latter, and giving the teacher the role of adapting the appropriate feedback to the student's specificity and caracteristics.

Formative Assessment helps teachers know how students are doing. Did this particular student master the learning target? Does this student understand the concepts? Has this student mastered the skills? Is this student engaged in the learning? Does the student need additional supports or scaffolds? These questions help us identify which students need enrichment and which need intervention (like a small group pull-out).

Formative Assessment helps teachers know how the class as a whole is doing. What are the overall trends that you notice? This helps teachers with the larger lesson planning cycle of planning, implementing, and assessing.

Formative Assessment helps students know their mastery level. They should be able to comprehend what they know, what they don’t know, and where they will go next. But assessment might also help increase student motivation or self-efficacy. It might be less evaluative and be more descriptive.

This tool ensures fairness and eliminates bias, as it selects students without any predetermined criteria. By using AI, teachers can ensure that every student has an equal chance of participating and being assessed.

Collaborative coaching - AI tools also enable collaborative coaching, a teaching method that promotes teamwork and peer learning. Through these tools, teachers can foster a collaborative environment where students can support and learn from each other. By leveraging AI tools for formative assessment, educators can effectively track student progress, provide timely feedback, and tailor instruction to meet individual needs. This integration of AI and collaborative coaching enhances the teaching and learning experience, making it more personalized, engaging, and effective.

I found the video interesting, particularly as far as the collaboration between teachers is concerned. We know how important it is for students to collaborate and share, but quite often we forget teacher should do the same if they want to improve their practices. Sharing is the 'magic word' here, as teachers also share their intentions with their students. In this way students are made 'responsible' for their own learning and this makes them actually learn and improve. I believe AI can help create activities to check their progress and activities able to engage them.

Everyone of these instruments to help students in their learning path can be also used through technology. For example the traffic light can be realized through a colored poll with survery monkey or any other technological instrument like this. Teacher plans, programms, lessons and the techniques used can be shared in a virtual classroom.

That's not a reality in my teaching environment, and I think it can make a huge different. Some of the reasons were stated in the video: learning from one another, contrasting ideas, planning together from the results of what they both see in the classroom...

Another thing I liked was how they turned assessment into something very visual for all the members of the teaching-learning process. No grades appeared, as this was formative assessment, but they were not needed. The learners can identify much more easily where they are in their learning process. And the teachers, at the same time, have a good snapshot of how each of the learners is evolving and who needs more support.

I suppose they implement strategies for the students not to use stickers in imitation. If that would happen, the reflection process would not be working well.

The video provides testimonials on how effective formative assessment is when implemented coherently and consistently. Both teachers outline how they notice that through formative assessment processes students are better able to acquire learning outcomes and their engagement and participation increased. Formative assessment builds on the idea that students are placed at the centre of learning, and are given increased responsibility in leading their learning, as they learn how to assess their understanding, and direct their learning forward, by identifying their next steps in learning. The shared video also highlights how teachers are constantly getting feedback from learners, both verbal or written, and using that feedback to shape and adapt future learning. I consider this aspect as an important feature that AI can strongly support and enhance, as teachers can bring in the feedback gathered through multiple modes, including apps and information shared online, and AI can in turn provide suggestions as to how future learning can be tweaked to be able to offer a more customised and personalised approach to learning for each student. AI can also process the different feedback from students and provide tailored feedback to them, to help them scaffold and extend their learning accordingly.

Besides and more importantly, technology can make education more accessible to students with diverse learning needs. AI-powered tools can assist in providing real-time translations, closed captioning, text-to-speech features, and other accommodations, ensuring that all students can participate and learn effectively.

The formative assessment activities used by the teachers in the video are simple, motivating ways to promote student reflection on their learning. In the first example of the random selection tool, I didn't understand if it was a digital tool or if it was a physical tool as it seemed that the teacher had different coloured sticks or sticks with the students' names. Although this strategy was used for primary school students I saw in it a way to get my students talking in English class. If they are chosen randomly they have to be prepared to answer and it's like the teacher said it won't always be the student who always has his/her hand up to answer. Asking a classmate to help with the answer is also a good strategy. I usually ask another student to help but if it is the student him/herself it does make the task more collaborative. In relation to the ramdom selection tool there are many digital tools online. I usually use them to make up groups for group work.

The learning intention wall is also a good example of formative assessment because one of the characterisitics of formative assessment is letting the students know what they have to learn, the goal that they have to reach.

In the video there was a lot of focus no feedback for the teachers but I think that the feedback the teacher gives is fundamental for the student to know "where they are" in the learning process and how they can reach the goal.

These examples are also important to show that giving feedback is not a difficult, time consuming process, it can be as simple as a traffic light system. another positive point is that the students are engaged in their assessment. that is very important because it gives them more responsibility.

This video was really interresting to watch, many thanks, simple technique for a very skilled teachers.

Now about the subject matter: Using AI also means using a screen interface in schools. There are many recommendations regarding the limited use of screens for children. Here we are discussing improving a highly efficient, simple, formative evaluation with low energy consumption and no screen fixation, while AI itself requires an enormous amount of energy for its design, programming, and operation. Should we even consider it for a moment? How is electricity produced? How many resources can we still sustainably produce on this planet and for how long? Yes, we may save on paper, but we won't save on precious minerals, and although trees are vital for ecological balance, not all elements involved in creating AI are. Let's only use them only when truly necessary. Let's save electricity, non-renewable resources, and preserve the well-being of young children.

After watching the video, several formative assessment strategies stood out, including the use of questioning during class discussions, exit tickets, and quick quizzes to check for student understanding. Additionally, I noticed techniques like peer review and self-assessment to encourage students to reflect on their own learning and provide feedback to their peers. These strategies align well with effective formative assessment practices, which aim to provide immediate feedback and allow for instructional adjustments based on student responses.

Potential Enhancements Through Technology and AI

Technology, including AI, has the potential to transform these formative assessment practices in several ways:

Instant Feedback and Real-Time Adjustments: AI-powered tools such as Socrative and Kahoot! can provide immediate feedback during class activities, helping both teachers and students identify gaps in understanding. This real-time feedback loop allows educators to adjust their teaching strategies on the spot, ensuring that misconceptions are addressed before they become ingrained. According to the European School Education Platform, AI can reduce the subjectivity of human grading and automate formative tasks, allowing teachers to focus more on personalized instruction(

European School Education Platform

).

Differentiation and Personalized Learning Paths: AI tools like Conker or Quizizz AI can create differentiated assessments that are tailored to each student’s learning needs. For example, by analyzing past performance data, AI can suggest specific content or question types that target areas where students are struggling, thus supporting a more personalized learning experience(

TechNotes Blog

). This aligns with the principles of formative assessment by helping students work at their own pace and receive targeted support.

Enhanced Peer and Self-Assessment: Tools like Padlet or Flipgrid can facilitate peer review and self-assessment in a structured way, where students can share their reflections, comment on each other’s work, and track their own learning progress. AI can further enhance this process by providing automated suggestions or prompts that guide students in giving constructive feedback, thus promoting metacognitive skills and self-regulation.

Stealth Assessment and In-Depth Analysis: As highlighted in the CIRCLS article, AI can conduct “stealth assessments,” collecting data in the background as students engage in learning activities. This means that data on time spent on tasks, problem-solving approaches, and even affective responses can be gathered without interrupting the learning flow. Such information is valuable for creating a comprehensive picture of student learning, which traditional formative assessments may not capture(

CIRCLS

).

Reduction of Administrative Load: AI can automate routine assessment tasks, such as grading low-stakes quizzes or analyzing patterns in student responses, saving teachers time. With tools like Moodle Analytics, teachers can generate reports and visualizations that highlight trends in student performance, making it easier to spot areas that need attention. This streamlined approach ensures that teachers can focus more on interacting with students rather than managing administrative details(

European School Education Platform

).

Conclusion

Integrating AI and other digital technologies into formative assessment practices can significantly enhance teaching and learning by providing timely feedback, personalizing instruction, facilitating reflective practices, and reducing the teacher’s workload. The key is to use these tools thoughtfully, ensuring that technology complements, rather than replaces, the human elements of teaching—empathy, guidance, and mentorship.
