If facial recognition technology is widely used by retailers overseas, is this ok to use in New Zealand? as in all things it come to how the tech is used and who is used it.

If so, what communications should be in place for the public so that they are aware of the CCTV facial recognition technology, and how information gathered is used?
by following the Privacy Act of 1993.

In my personal opinion i think it would work if you inform the public going into the store that a CCTV recognition is on effect, it will lessen the shoplifting. It's for the business to protect it self. Base on research New Zealanders don't like to have their privacy violated, it could be misused for a different agenda. What the government can do is ease the the public that its a precaution method to also protect its citizens and that the technology wont be used for illegal purposes.

1. If so, what communications should be in place for the public so that they are aware of the CCTV facial recognition technology, and how information gathered is used?
- If companies decide to go ahead with using facial recognition in stores, it should be noted by the entrance on a sign that upon entering the store, not only will you be captured on CCTV, but your face will be recorded and stored. The sign could put in small print a disclaimer such as 'For more details, please visit <website> where they can describe their action in detail and the customer's rights.

It should work fine, as long as people are properly informed before entry that they are recorded in that way. There is good benifits to help identify potential theives. People behave better when they know they are recorded, even more so when they can be identified so quickly.

Facial recognition technology is something that is used in many different cities and places across the globe. That alone is a big advancement in technology it self. Districts and governments of these cities not only have your information but your face too, it makes living in those area's more secure and helps keep the criminals off the streets.
If this was a thing that trended to New Zealand it wouldn't be as much of a big deal as people believe it to be. It would be the same as every other place in the world. Stores and public places would have to mention that "CCTV recording in this area" along with a mention of facial recognition, so that people are aware. It shouldn't be something that's kept a secret from the public.

Facial recognition software is in widespread use by overseas retailers.
Does this mean it is acceptable for use in New Zealand? It is unclear.
On the plus side, it provides an alert when identifying previously known offenders and brings up information to make reports that would otherwise take a long time to process manually.
On the con side, it raises privacy concerns because of the sensitive nature of information gathered by use of this system.
If recognition technology is used in business, customers need to be notified that such personal information is being stored. People need a way to appeal wrongful convictions that could result from malfunction or misuse of this technology.
