What is the dramatic situation?

The poem about a poverty stricken family that was/is struggling during the pandemic. In the poem it talks about how the family struggles to find enough food to feed the family and they try to find compensations on how to save food. Ideas like the adults eating less or adding more water and less rice to lugaw, small solutions like that to try and prolong the scarce supply that they have. Not only do they worry about their situation, but also the state of the world. The family does not worry about not having enough food, but also how torn the world is due to the pandemic. Having a disease and streets monitored by the corrupt police only add up to their problems and make it more difficult to live each day. Lastly the poem closes out by talking about these injustices. It closes out with questions about how unfair the world has gotten and if they are at fault for the cruel situation they have been placed in.

Who is the persona (the person “speaking” in the poem)? How can you describe them based on what is provided in the poem?

Through further analysis of the poem the persona may be considered to be an adult or even more a parent. There are mentions of children and referring to them in a way of their own. Though it may not be what the position of the persona is in the family, it can be sure to say that the persona is distraught, worried and upset. This is due to the injustices that the persona has felt and all the problems that have been bombarding their family. The persona can also be described as caring and concerned, as they are only looking out for their family and trying to ensure their well being.

How would you describe the language in the poem? What are some of the figures of speech or images present in the poem? What meaning is conjured by important lines in the poem and how do they contribute to the entire meaning of the poem?

The language in the poem is quite straightforward with barely any figures of speech. The author chose to use uncomplicated lines making it easier to understand the context of the poem. Though the author was able to produce striking lines, that encapsulates the gravity of the story and also grabs the reader's attention. The line “Do you honestly think we would be able to stretch our patience, our faith, our body, our limits” is very highlighted in the text giving it proper emphasis. In this line the persona shows that they are at their breaking point and that they are extended beyond their limits. Another important line is “What’s so right in being this poor? What’s so right in suffering silence?” helps in making the reader think and with the story's conclusion. After reading the poem these questions are asked not only to the person that the persona is having a conversation with but also to the reader. These questions make the reader think and reflect on what the pandemic was for them and how others may have had different experiences. Other than striking lines the author also played with some imagery into the poem, to immerse the reader even more. Lines like “Gina. take a look at the old Fita bin” or “What if the lugaw had a few more cups of water to it?” can show how the family struggles. The fita bin shows how the family cannot afford to buy a separate container for rice and choose to recycle a fita bin. The lugaw line indicates that the family does not have enough money to buy other foods and choose to eat only rice.

What do you think the poem tells us about the world? How is our world reflected in and by this poem?

The poem shows one of the world's darkest moments and a pivotal point in history. The pandemic has affected the world in many negative ways and has left many having to regain what they have lost. The poem shows a different perspective to what has happened to give readers a point of view of what the lower class may have experienced during the pandemic.

Do you think that your chosen text is relevant to the world today? Why or why not?

The chosen text is relevant today as there are two highlighted issues that the world is still facing until today. What makes this even worse is that both of these issues have been present before the pandemic and have been spotlighted by the pandemic. First is poverty, which is not having enough not having enough money to cover basic expenses. This issue has already been growing even before the pandemic, though the pandemic has worsened this and put many more in poverty. Many more families have fallen into poverty due to the lack of work and forms of earning due to lockdown. Another issue is police violence, and how it was addressed during the events of the pandemic. One of the prominent events that happened during the pandemic was the George Floyd case, which showed how hostile the police authorities can get. This got people’s attention and showed the true colors and the police used their power for their own will. This issue was present even before the pandemic, where police authorities would discriminate against people based on their race and nationality though only during this pandemic was it addressed. Both of these issues are still present in the world today and many people still face, though due to the many issues our world faces some problems are forgotten and left unsolved.

What are your personal thoughts, comments, and reactions to the short story/poem/essay you chose? In what ways does your chosen text resonate with you?

The poem is very well written as it sends a message and makes it easy to understand for the readers. The author wants to give light to the situation of poverty stricken people and how much of a struggle it may have been for them. It gives a new perspective and an insight, helping readers feel like they are in the shoes of these people struggling. It also taps into the reader's emotions and helps them resonate with the piece more. Overall the poem and author did a great job in relaying an forgotten side of the pandemic that many people faced and it serves as a reminder of the struggles that many people face.
