Time Extensions (All Exams)

All schools have the right to extend test-taking time for ELL on NYS ELA Assessments if they deem it necessary. Principals will consult with the students teacher to determine the appropriate amount of classroom time.

Separate Locations (All Exams)

ELLs are allowed to test in a separate locations from everyone else to help them succeed according to NYS. This can be done individually or in small groups.

Third Reading of Listening Selection (English Language Arts Exams Only)

For ELLs in grades 3-8, and on the Regents, administrators of the exam are allowed to read the listening portion for a third time to the students.

Bilingual Dictionaries and/or Glossaries

Students are allowed to use dictionaries in order to help them with their writing. At all times, students should have access to these. It is important to note, that these books should only provide direct translation of a word, NOT a definition.

Next Day Completion

ELLs are now allowed to have the next day after the exam to complete it. This gives them enough time to maximize their capabilities and use all of their accommodations.
