I change voices, use sound effects, use visually engaging slides, have special slides for peer praise, use stickers for correct work, and put myself on camera with crazy hats. We also do a quiz per week together.

I can't say that I do much more than make the class interesting. Timing also plays a factor. My BB kids meet 4 times a week, but lessons are condensed to 20-minute sessions, and I've received positive feedback from the kids about this. Many of them actually prefer 4x20 over 1x60min class per week. We get stuff done, and they enjoy the ease of time.

-Karl

I try to make a point to respect their time. It's all about giving them what they need. I am concise and intentional in order to make it worth their time. They know if they are ready for the week when they leave CC.

In class we work questions from or similar to the quiz. For below basic we use class time to complete a quiz, test or correct missed questions. The appreciate the teacher help and that they are completing a required task in CC. I email students after they have missed a required session as a reminder of the live requirement.

They know it is a safe environment to make mistakes and learn from those mistakes. I spent the first month building a strong relationship with the students so they know that I care. I make it fun for them to attend and we have a blast learning together. Every day that we have a CC the students get a Remind text from me. It is usually a funny snap chat or meme reminding them that I am looking forward to seeing them in the live class. I also tell math puns and jokes during the lesson, which they LOVE. We also sometimes work out questions from their quizzes or tests together. Many of them ask to stay and talk with me after class is over.

-Traci

Our Community of Learners in Science

We have worked TOGETHER to change our thoughts about what a "classroom" is. We began by changing the name from science class connect to opportunities for community gatherings. We changed the connects to terms like "mistake" to learning opportunity. We have created their own peer-to-peer shout-out system of "Squishys" and these are posted in announcements every week. We created a culture of mutual respect not only peer-to-peer but teacher to student. They know I give my all and respect their time and in return they do the same. We are a community, we celebrate each others' successes and we support each other in our challenges. We have an "us against the world" mentality. Our time together is full of LOTS of laughter and building of trust and respect and then the academics sneak in like a ninja. I like to think of it as "ninja teaching" it just becomes part of our free form and fluid conversation. We chat in the mornings over our coffee and as the "teacher" I simply help facilitate the conversation into the topics from class. I include a lot of multi-media resources. I provide guided notes, so students feel prepared BEFORE community meetings, and when they feel prepared, they have more confidence to be an active participant in the process. We maintain a level of business professional speech with each other and this fosters a sense of respect and safety within the community. And I ALWAYS thank them for their time and participation. Our community is about so much MORE than me. I NEVER refer to it as MY classroom. I use OUR and WE instead and this gives everyone EQUAL ownership. And with this feeling of equality, they want to be there because they feel valued.
But in all honesty, wouldn't this be a better question for our students? Ask them WHY they choose specific courses over others to attend. I think WE can learn more FROM them on this topic.
-Jaime
