The negative effects of mass media can cause many physical as well as mental health problems to people and can lead people to crime, poverty, and other such severe outcomes.

Therefore, there is no doubt that we enormously benefit from mass media.

Before considering the benefit of mass media, there is a necessity to understand clearly what “mass media” means. “Mass media” is a tool for people to communicate with others, including broadcasting, publishing, and the Internet. Broadcasting and publishing had appeared and had been there to be with human-being for centuries, however, not until the internet appeared have mass media proved their key role in our life. 

Since the internet was invented, every day we have been surrounded by a large amount of information with a very high speed of spread. People nowadays do not need to buy paper newspapers or wait until the broadcasting time of the news on the radio or television, instead, people would like to seek new information on social networks or online newspaper sites. This would save us much time to stay updated with the flow of information, as a result, this is considered a benefit of mass media.

Moreover, thanks to reaching these sites, important information about natural disasters or diseases is updated immediately to help people to be well-prepared to protect themselves and their families. Also, thanks to the large number of accesses to online sites, the information about people who are severely affected by starvation, poverty, illiteracy, natural disasters, and pandemics is widely spread to everyone, since then, charity organizations can receive a larger donation, which they will use to provide those people with better supports so that they can overcome their difficulties much easier. Therefore, in other words, we can say that mass media contributes to raising our living standards globally.

Secondly, with the internet, especially social networks, people can keep in contact with their family members, their relatives, and their friends wherever they are and how far the distances between them are. We can contact others not only via text messages but also via voice calls and video calls, which are now very popular with people who are living far from their families for work or study.

Finally, companies, especially intercontinental ones, nowadays do not need to spend money on traveling such long distances for periodic meetings and conferences. Instead, they can hold distancing meetings via the Internet, which is not only money-saving but also time-saving. By saving this amount of money, a company or a business group can earn more profits, which directly contributes to the growth of the global economy.

In order to avoid the dangers of mass media, we have to be aware of them and be conscious of users.   

Firstly, while using social networks, where all kinds of information from various sources are posted without being clarified, we are at risk of fake news and online violence. With a large amount of information spread every day, if we are not conscious enough to choose the true and necessary one to receive, we are more likely to consume fake news, and this can be very dangerous. Fake news can lead to a wrong understanding of a problem, and with the speed of spreading information on social networks, the wrong understanding can access many people and might not be stopped on time. For example, during the Covid-19 pandemic, there was some fake news about the side effects of the Covid-19 vaccine, and the speed of spreading this wrong information was too fast that medical organizations in the world had many difficulties in preventing the wrong understanding and providing the true information, which slowed the process of global vaccination, which was very vital at the peak of the pandemic. Fortunately, doctors, medical organizations, and governments around the world could make great efforts to control the circumstances and overcome the pandemic. From this example, it can be concluded that fake news can have global negative effects.

Moving on to the individual level of the negative effects of fake news, if bad information about an individual is posted on social networks, the individual is in danger of suffering from online violence. The power of negative comments on Facebook or Instagram even affects a person’s feelings more than violence in physical form. Being online attacked can lead to negative feelings of disappointment or unhappiness or, more seriously, depression. The rise of online attacks might be responsible for the rate of depression and suicide in modern society.

Generally speaking, even though we benefit a lot from mass media, especially the internet, we still have to face many disadvantages, or in other words can be considered dangers, to unconscious users, of which the most serious are fake news and online violence. 
As a result, to make full use of the benefits of mass media and avoid its risks, we have to gain enough knowledge to be conscious users, which includes being able to recognize and avoid fake news, besides avoiding being online attackers and being bullied. These essential skills need to be provided to children and trained continuously by parents and educators.
