Choose 3 Formalist Lens Questions to respond to. Your responses should thoroughly respond to the prompt in at least three sentences.

Choose a significant event that occurs in your reading. What do you think the author's purpose was in telling that part of the story? A significant event that occurs in the author's life is when Rex the father of Jeannette the author does the Rex-Wall style which is when they escape and run out of place. This isn't the first time but this time in particular they ran out of the hospital because her dad found it dumb why they wanted to keep her daughter in the hospital more. Rex is a person who always thinks he is better than everybody and thinks highly of himself. Jeannette has experienced this many times because later on when her little sister was born they did the same exact thing in the hospital. Jeannette is used to running out of places with her parents.

How effective is the author’s use of dialogue? How does dialogue enhance the storytelling? The way Jeannette uses her dialogue is very engaging in some way. The way how she implements dialogue in her book makes it seem the reader is also there experiencing what is happening. Dialogue helps make us readers find a way to learn how to know how the characters are and how they are feeling.

What figures of speech are used? (metaphors, similes, hyperbole, personification, etc.) Some figures of speech that are used in the story are metaphors when the father and mother start arguing with each other and cussing. One thing the mother calls the father is a flea-bitten drunk. And the Father would say back flint faced hag. With all of these cusses are each other gives us dialogue and tells us how the parents are and how they look.

Choose 3 Formalist Lens Questions to respond to. Your responses should thoroughly respond to the prompt in at least three sentences.

How might readers in different time periods or of different ages interpret the text?

Readers can most likely relate to this book. This is because Rex the father can access so many jobs after getting fired and fired and still can somehow always get a job after being homeless. The older generation can probably relate to this because they have experienced working in a job and getting fired after words. The younger generation probably can't because there is a high demand for working and it is harder to start working and most haven't started working in a job yet.

Which of your personal experiences or memories is affecting your perceptions of the story?

A personal experience that is affecting my perception of the story is when I was a kid I would behave and not cause any damage or annoy anyone unlike the kids in this book on how Jeannette almost died by being set on fire. It is changing my perception of this story because I wasn't like how Jeannette was as a kid always being outside on my own and getting myself in crazy situations. I couldn't do it to myself to go outside on my own and not be scared what might happen because no one is watching me to be safe.

What was the work’s original intended audience? To what extent are you similar or different from that audience?

The original intended audience for this story is for the people that don't know the struggle of being homeless and still find themselves to make the best out of the situation. Jeannette so far makes it seem like her childhood wasn't as bad and being homeless wasn't a problem. But deep diving into this book you can understand how people could be living always moving, starving, money when given is very tight, and the fact this was a whole family was harder because everyone had to share and had to believe and be happy that everything is going to fine.

Choose 3 Formalist Lens Questions to respond to. Your responses should thoroughly respond to the prompt in at least three sentences.

How do economic conditions determine the characters' lives?

In the Glass Castle the characters that are presented are affected by the economy because of the costs of things to live. There is a lot to pay for to live a normal life like everybody else like education, health, rent. For Jeannette's family it was a struggle because in the schools she would get enrolled to with her siblings weren't the best because the staff there would do a lot of weird crazy things like carrying a rifle in an elementary school. Her parents wouldn't pay for anything at the hospital leading them to flee out of the building without paying anything. And food as well there were many days where the whole family went without eating because it was hard to afford food. And lastly rent to own a place to live is challenging because you have to pay a certain amount to live there and this time in particularly with our characters they were jobless at some points in the book which led to so much moving around from state to state. Jeannette's family are considered the lower class of living. When being there it is difficult to have a livable life like everybody else in the world. There was hardly any help given to poor people back then compared to what we have now. There are more job opportunities and living places for people in need of help to live.
