Andy Warhol's Liz Taylor

The Art Institute of Chicago describes that in this work, Taylor's "signature features — her eyes and lips — have been accentuated with colors that hover between vibrant and vulgar. This garish use of 'makeup' is meant to suggest style and glamor, reinforcing Taylor’s celebrity status.” This description provoked questions for us around how the work simultaneously lauds and problematizes the longstanding markers of "beauty" entrenched in our cultural understandings. It made us questions what "glamor" truly is, and if the toil and oppressive circumstances linked to it might void the term of any true meaning. We are interested in exploring such questions within the piece.
https://www.artic.edu/artworks/229406/liz-3-early-colored-liz

We found such advertisements to relate to the questions provoked by Warhol's Liz Taylor, for they further outline rigid ideas around female-identifying beauty. We also felt that some elements of the graphic design, such as the figure's hand positioning, might be interesting as an impetus for gesture phrase work.

This may start with a more exaggerated sense of beauty (that really looks/feels ugly) and morph into a stripped down, stark, and natural aesthetic (that feels more truly beautiful)... or we may incorporate a traditional sense of beauty to begin that gets destroyed towards the end of the piece into a stark, ugly feeling.
