The theme is shown when the author writes, “Maddy’s only six now, and ever since she was born I’d been helping out the best I could with her. But with Ma losing her toes and feet, helping out became straight-up taking care of.” This quote demonstrates the theme because, in the story, Patina has to adjust to different environments due to her mother’s amputation. Patina has to become more independent and care for her sister even more as she adjusts to a new family and her dad’s passing.
