What was the court's decision?

The Supreme Court decided that Ohio had to follow fair procedures to make sure that the misconduct had taken place before they could punish students. The court said that because suspensions could possibly hurt the futures of the students, they have the right to due process just like every other citizen in the United States. Students have the right, when facing a 10 day or less suspension, to have their charges against them given to them. If they deny the charges, they have the right to an explanation of the evidence against them and an opportunity to present their side of the story.

This case made it all the way to the Supreme Court, and both sides had their own arguments.

The officials argued that they were following Ohio state law, showing that "An Ohio law allowed public school principals to suspend a student for misconduct for up to ten days without a hearing."

On the other hand, the students argued that there was a section of this law that stated that "The student's parents be notified of the suspension and the reasons for it," and that the law was against the fourth amendment right of due process.
