The character I chose from A Raisin In The Sun was Beneatha. I chose her because she was way ahead of her time. She was always determined to do her own thing and achieve what she wanted. Although before deciding to become a doctor, she was still finding herself and couldn't keep herself interested in one thing. She also is independent for the most part, she doesn't need a man and was able to come to terms with who she is and let her hair down, literally!

Character Trait..

If I could pick just one character trait for Beneatha it would be bold/adventurous. She did not let anything stop her from doing what she wanted to and she was always making bold moves no matter what anyone thought or believed. For example, on page 51 she was having a long conversation with Mama and one of the things she stated was "It's all a matter of ideas, and God is just one idea I don't accept." This was a big deal for someone to say in the 1950s, and Beneatha was one of the boldest people to say that, especially to her Mama.

I do sympathize ..

I sympathize with Beneatha because I understand not knowing what to do with your life and just wanting to be free of other peoples expectations for yourself. I also understand wanting to love yourself and find who you are as a person, I feel like everyone at one point in their life can sympathize with that. I think her weaknesses are she wants so much but she doesn't always follow through with what she says. I think her strengths are not being afraid to show herself or tell people what she wants, and again, she is very bold.

Art..

I think this is art that could relate to Beneatha because it shows a powerful looking woman reading a book. For Beneatha she was always very smart and wanted to be a doctor. As for the woman herself and the background, she is being surrounded by words that say 'don't', I assume that she is going against what others think and being bold and doing what she wants to do. That is such a Benetha thing, kind of like when she let her hair down or wanted to become a doctor even though her brother said she shouldn't/couldn't.

I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings

By: Dr. Maya Angelou

A free bird leaps on the back of the wind
and floats downstream till the current ends
and dips his wing in the orange suns rays
and dares to claim the sky.

But a bird that stalks down his narrow cage
can seldom see through his bars of rage
his wings are clipped and his feet are tied
so he opens his throat to sing.

The caged bird sings with a fearful trill
of things unknown but longed for still
and his tune is heard on the distant hill
for the caged bird sings of freedom.

The free bird thinks of another breeze
and the trade winds soft through the sighing trees
and the fat worms waiting on a dawn-bright lawn
and he names the sky his own.

But a caged bird stands on the grave of dreams
his shadow shouts on a nightmare scream
his wings are clipped and his feet are tied
so he opens his throat to sing.

The caged bird sings with a fearful trill
of things unknown but longed for still
and his tune is heard on the distant hill
for the caged bird sings of freedom.

This poem relates to Beneatha AND A Raisin In The Sun because it talks about how a caged bird wants freedom which is Beneatha wanting freedom to be herself and find who she is, and it also talks about a free bird and how good everything is for them and its why birds want to be free. Beneatha is the free bird when she finally decides to embrace herself and become who she truly is. Just by letting her hair down, wearing the clothes she chooses, and singing the songs she does you can tell has made her feel more confident and happy being a free bird.

Theme Of RITS..

A theme of Raisin In The Sun is dreams. That is because all throughout the play everyone was doing their own thing just trying to complete their dreams. For Ruth, it was for her family to have a better life, for Mama it was for her family to have a good life, for Beneatha it was to become a doctor, and for Walter it was to start a bar and be successful. Other characters also had dreams but those were just a few. One quote is an example of this is Walters dream, "You wouldn’t understand yet, son, but your daddy’s gonna make a transaction . a business transaction that’s going to change our lives. . . That’s how come one day when you ‘bout seventeen years old I’ll come home . I’ll pull the car up on the driveway just a plain black Chrysler, I think, with white walls no black tires the gardener will be clipping away at the hedges and he’ll say, “Good evening, Mr. Younger.” And I’ll say, “Hello, Jefferson, how are you this evening?” And I’ll go inside and Ruth will come downstairs and meet me at the door and we’ll kiss each other and she’ll take my arm and we’ll go up to your room to see you sitting on the floor with the catalogs of all the great schools in America around you. . All the great schools in the world! And.. and I’ll say, all right son it’s your seventeenth birthday, what is it you’ve decided? Just tell me, what it is you want to be and you’ll be it. . . . Whatever you want to be—Yessir! You just name it, son and I hand you the world!"

A theme of Fences is also dreams. Troy wanted to once be a baseball player, Corey wanted to be a footballer player, and the colored trash men wanted to be drivers. One quote from the play said by Corey is "Papa done went up to the school and told Coach Zellman I can't play football no more. ...Told him to tell the recruiter not to come....Just cause you didn't have a chance! You just scared I'm gonna be better than you, that's all." His dream was to play football but his father would not let him.

Both Fence and Raisin In The Sun are alike because both of one of their main themes is about dreams. For both plays, not many of the dreams were accomplished except for one in each play, and both had to do with the world being against them because of the color of their skin, but they did not take that and were able to over come the situation they were put in because of their skin color.
Another reason both plays are alike is because their characters and morals are similar. For two of the main characters, Troy and Walter they are both the head of their families and both made some pretty fatal mistakes. Although they made some pretty bad mistakes, they always loved their family and wanted the best for them.
