In the very first scene of the book, Patrick is walking to his house in Brazil as he passes the soccer boys playing on the street. I love how John Grisham, the author, tied the beginning of the book to the end of the book this way. It shows a constant before and after everything that happened within the book. The specific quote explains the shadows being gone. This took place during the early times of the extensive legal pressure hounding down on Patrick. It is one of the first times we hear him opening up about the occurrences and why he did what he did. As you read further, we hear about the troubles he was having with his wife, Trudy and his hardships in life (including the new job). I like how this was said as it paints a nice picture that everyone can relate too in terms of feeling the same way Patrick did, although most people wouldn't actually go through with it. At the beginning of the book, the readers are not given much information about the characters or anything for that matter. For example, the book starts out where Patrick himself isn't the most likable person as he is a thief and a hardy lawyer. As we read on, the narrator reveals more and more little bits at a time. At this point in the book, we have learned more about Patrick's life before the money heist and his current situation allowing the reader to be more empathetic to his character. He is on the road being escorted by FBI agents as he is having this internal realization. I like how this quote shows him processing the pros and cons of being on the run with the stolen money (after the fact). As a con, Patrick refers to the dark shadows as growing bolder and larger. His pro on the other hand is a constant hope/wish for freedom. This is emphasizing that originally the pro does outweigh the con. But as time goes on, the con grows too eventually outweighing the pro, none of which Patrick appeared to have thought of until he had already gone through with everything. The second to last sentence of this quote states, "Life on the run is life in the past." (Grisham, 116) I love this portion of the quote as it says that when you go on the run, leave everything behind, you can't truly live on as you will have the burden of the past constantly with you, holding you down (essentially running in place). At this point, most of his wounds had heeled, getting up and walking around, doing exercise as he could, and keeping up with all the legal actions. He is also longing for Eva, his love. The quote references both Patrick and Danilo as they are the same person. Patrick represents his time in Mississippi before he ran off. The use of the name Patrick here is also quite literal as it was the name he went by back then. In the second part of this sentence involves Danilo. Again, this was the name he switched to go by when he ran off with the money. The use of it also however represents his whole life on the run, that version of himself. This quote is questioning why the character can't have yet another 're-do' of life as he has already lived two different lives. I like the quote as in this other life that he is yearning for, he is hoping in respect to love. Like I've mentioned before, the author only gives us little bits of information at a time and it eventually builds to see the broader picture of things. There was nothing that made Patrick a likable character at the beginning and as we keep reading, there is more and more that is relatable/likable about him. This quote was brought up while Patrick was talking to his friend Karl on a hospital bench. Patrick was opening up to Karl as he was not only a friend, but a judge, even if not for his case. Karl asked Patrick about evidence, including a shotgun, that was mysteriously placed under a bed. Patrick being uncomfortable answering, stared off and said he didn't know. Before speaking, he took a minute to think and while doing so, remembered the movie quote. This quote is important in that it explains why Patrick got caught, as he comes to realize in that moment. When committing a murder, it is so thought out and planned that you wouldn't go through with it without being sure no mistakes could be made.
