HIV is caused by the human immunodeficiency virus which attacks the helper T cells of the immune system, therefore weakening the immune system. This weakened immune system results in AIDS if left untreated, which happens when there are too few immune cells to fight off other illnesses. Symptoms of HIV include fever, headaches, sore throat, night sweats, oral lesions, rashes, swollen lymph nodes, ect. Newborns infected with HIV may experience catastrophic encephalopathy, with loss of brain growth, motor abnormalities, and cognitive dysfunction. Longterm HIV effects various systems in the body increasing risks for other health conditions such as cardiovascular, kidney, diabetes, and bone disease. No cure exists for HIV, but medications such as HIV antivirals can control the progression of HIV and prevent AIDS.
