He claimed to have traveled as far north as 48° N (on parallel with Vancouver, Canada) before extreme cold conditions turned him back. Drake anchored near today’s San Francisco and claimed the surrounding land, which he called New Albion, for Queen Elizabeth.

Afterwards, he headed to Panama and raifded the villages and took there gold and silver.  On his third trip, Sir Francis Drake went to South America, to the east coast of North America, and then to the islands south of Asia, finally going up to Africa and then back home.  In December 1577 Drake began his venture from Plymouth aboard his ship, the Pelican (also known as the Golden Hind). On his ship they used a navigation tool called an astrolabe; one of the oldest navigation tools known, it allowed sailors to know the latitude of wherever they were. Some hardships Sir Francis Drake experienced was when the furious Spaniards were in the way to get back to England. This lead to Sir Francis Drake following Magellan's  route which helped him become the first Englishman to circumnavigate the world. When the ships are in the Indian islands their ship hit a coral reef making the ship get stuckstuck, and eventually sank.
