1. My hometown is boring, and it only has a mall and a bunch of UFO sightings because the dumb locals believe that an alien appeared years ago right in Varginha, MG.

2. My family’s hometown is Lambari, a small but welcoming town.

3. The most beautiful city I’ve been to in Minas Gerais is Monte Verde, a tourist town all decked out, it looks like it came straight out of a fairytale.

4. The city I’d most like to visit is Phalaborwa, located in South Africa. In Minas Gerais, I’d like to visit Andradas because it has a beautiful rock called the Elephant Stone.

5. My favorite place in Minas Gerais is Varginha, but only because my grandparents live there.

I chose the Zoobotânico de Varginha for a guided tour because I really like animals and nature. I enjoy visiting places where I can see animals and learn more about them. The zoo is a great place to learn about different animals and how they live. I also like being in nature and seeing the trees and plants. That’s why I think the Zoobotânico is a good place for a tour.

New Animals Arrive at Varginha Zoo

This Thursday (16th), new animals arrived at the zoo, brought by the Zoo’s director, veterinarian Marcos Mina, and a team of caretakers. The animals came directly from the Wildlife Screening Center (CETAS), the Brazilian Institute of Environment and Renewable Natural Resources (IBAMA), and the State Institute of Forests (IEF) in Belo Horizonte.

CETAS is the facility that receives various types of wild animals that have been seized, injured, or donated by private individuals. Its role is to screen and rehome these animals. Whenever possible, the animals are released back into the wild in suitable environments. For those that cannot be released, one possible destination is transfer to zoos.

More than 80 new animals have joined the Varginha Zoo (Parque Zoobotânico Municipal Dr. Mário Frota). Some of the animals, such as parrots, macaws, boa constrictors, and a raccoon, are already in enclosures open to the public. Others, including two baby cougars, porcupines, and ferrets, will remain in a separate holding area for a few more days while their enclosures are properly prepared.

With the arrival of these new residents, the zoo now houses approximately 400 animals, including a cougar, mother-and-daughter ocelots (symbols of the zoo), rheas, macaws, parrots, ostriches, lions, bush dogs, caimans, and many others.

Recently, emergency renovation works under the Conduct Adjustment Agreement (TAC) were completed. Further improvements are currently underway, including the construction of a perimeter wall and renovations of all canid enclosures.

The zoo, which reopened after renovations, continues to be a tourist reference in the region. Groups, tour buses, and visitors regularly explore the site, which includes a large wooded area, a restored locomotive, trails, and lakes.

The Varginha Zoo is open every day from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. (08h às 16h).
Entrance fees are now R$ 8,00 (full) and R$ 4,00 (half) for students and seniors.
