People may experience benefits from robotic animals because they may be nice to touch, it can be comforting to pet soft things such as a dog or even a robotic dog. Also the robotic animal can bring memories of an old beloved pet that can bring comfort

Robotic animals can also be useful for teaching children how to behave around and treat animals, without putting a real animals welfare at risk, so it could be good for classrooms.

A downside may be that using robotic animals takes jobs away or replaces them. It must be a really rewarding job for humans being able to help people with their pet and might even be something they enjoy doing if they're not in employment (or in their spare time), they're still able to contribute in society but using robotic pets means this will be taken/is taken away from people.

As I was watching those 3 videos I was trying to imagine myself as an old, grumpy sod interacting with these robots. Perhaps I am skeptical but I feel everyone (at least in those videos) were old people who might not be that familiar with technology and so the surprise and impressiveness of how realistic these fake animals are might be driving the positive effects. I feel if I (hopefully still a young person - familiar with the development of technology) were in that situation and someone brought me a robot dog, I would be thinking "cool, but it is not real". I still think it is awesome that these robots are having a positive effect though don't get me wrong!

I agree that to me these do not seem as realistic to me, but it seems like they are still having a positive effect on people with dementia. I think stroking anything soft to touch can be calming but when it also responds positively to you, especially for example the cats purring that will bring joy and satisfaction.

I don't think I have anything extra to add but I think the points about them being able to be present more than real animals and not require caring for are a great way tp erradicate some of the welfare issues associated with using real animals.
