My goal would be to run multiple group homes around the valley that serve youth in foster care. A group home is a home that houses up to ten children who are currently in the foster care system. As the owner of a group home(s) I would be responsible for funding all needs for the children in my care. The state would pay/ reimburse with a stipend for each child in the home, each month. I would oversee all staff working in the group home and set up/ oversee programs for the children to participate in. The environment of a group home can be quite stressful and sad due to the trauma most of the children have faced/ are facing. I would work to create a peaceful and happy environment for staff and children to promote self-growth and to create a safe haven for all. I am intrigued by this line of work because of my experience having a therapeutic foster child and desire to impact the mass.

 I feel this skill is extremely valuable to anyone’s career. This skill is specifically beneficial in the field of foster care and when owning a group home. When working with children with traumatic backgrounds or in the behavioral health field it is important to be dedicated to ongoing learning. By attaining this skill I would stay up to date on newfound research and continue to better myself for the sake of the children in my care. 

Social and civic competences: 
In a field that can often be very stressful this skill would be quite beneficial. It would be necessary for me to maintain good mental and physical health. Also, being able to resolve conflict and work in diverse situations with people from a variety of cultures would be necessary. This skill is one I feel I am comfortable with, but could definitely benefit from further development in regards to the laws and rights in place for the population I plan to serve. 

Sense of initiative and entrepreneurship: 
 With the goal of owning multiple group homes in mind, I must develop an entrepreneur mindset in order to ensure funds are available to support multiple children, house them, and provide for all their needs. I will need to develop a “bigger picture” mindset and learn to think beyond the present and into the future in order to promote continuous growth.

Civic literacy: 
This is one of the skills I do not feel comfortable with and will need development. I will benefit greatly from learning and understanding the government processes related to owning a group home. By knowing how to advocate for the children in my care and how to exercise their rights I will be more successful in caring for them and providing them the quality of life they deserve.  

Guide and lead others: 
This is an extremely valuable skill. By becoming efficient with my communication I can help guide others and direct them towards the goals we are focused on. When owning a group home there is a need for staff’s presence in the home at all times. It is pertinent that I posess the skills to lead them and guide them in the right direction. I will need to be efficient in reminding the staff and children living in the homes of our mission.
