(A/E) Throughout the text, Capote uses lots of foreshadowing to tell about the upcoming murder of the Clutter Family. Him telling about the families’ murder beforehand indicates to me that the Clutter murder isn’t the climax of the book. There is probably a bigger, more intriguing event that takes place after their murder.

This could be foreshadowing about the clutters “leaving” the town in a sense of not being alive anymore. This could show that it would be best for the Clutters to leave at the moment, but Mr. Clutter protests and this could be ironic because later we see that it would be the best idea for the Clutters to move somewhere else.

The way that Willie-Jay is describing Perry in his letter fits the description of a serial killer perfectly. He seems to have psychopathic tendencies, as seen in his inability to form relationships with others (He did give a damn but who had ever given a damn about him?..Only Willy-Jay), his aggressive behavior towards others, self-grandiosity, and lack of remorse(simply for the hell of it, he had killed a colored-man in Las Vegas.) Before Perry has even killed the Clutters, Capote hints at the unstable personality of Perry, creating an ominous and foreboding character.

(Q) Could this be a motive for the crime? Perry goes on a long rant here stemming from missing Willie-Jay and going over their memories, one being a farewell letter from him. In this letter, he states that Perry is a good man but has a flaw, and the flaw is revealed in this excerpt. The Clutters are notorious in their town for being happy, helpful, kind, and strong in their town. Could their morals, contentedness, and happiness, prompt him to target and hurt them? It seems unlikely since Dick is the more dominant and leader-figure in their duo, but it could be a possibility. On page 45, Perry talks about how he only agreed to Dick's proposition to go to Kansas to get to a man named Willy, who he wishes to see again. On page 55, Dick is the one to talk about how he's simply using Perry. He says that Perry has a "gift" for killing, that he's a natural. And that that gift can be cultivated under proper care.... And that he's only pretending to be interested in Perry's dreams of treasure.

This makes me think that there will be some future tension between the two as they slowly discover that they've just been using one another the entire time, faking friendship and interest.

(Q) This quote is a little bit difficult for me to understand. I think that the author is saying that the diary is made for five years, so it has five years’ worth of entries, and she had it only for four years. But what does this mean? How can she have a five-year diary but only have 4 years of existence? I also wonder if this is foreshadowing what happens in a few pages. (A/E) I feel like these lines show what type of person Mr.Clutter is. These lines show how he is a hard worker and faithful person. Even though his wife was sick, he still manages to take in a “women’s role” while taking care of his work affairs. I also think that the author puts in good qualities of Mr.Cultter to show and make the reader feel a certain way and wonder why he was murder. He is this good person who takes care of his sick wife so why was he murdered? Is what most reader would think. I feel like there has to be this "dark side" of Mr.Cultter. No one can be this good of a person so I feel like this shows many possibilities of the murder.

This quote shows that Dick Hickock is thinking about the idea of robbing and killing everybody. He insists that everyone is dying even if the Clutters have guests. Why would Herb clutter take out a policy that paid double indemnity on his very last day alive?

Later on in the book it is stated that that is one of the largest policies ever taken out. The chances are increasingly slim. Possible motive for murder, preemptive death/planned it himself, sheer coincidence. $40k was a lot for Herb Clutter to put down in 1965, and in today's terms, adjusted for inflation it would be about $347,386.67 in 2021. However, we can’t forget that this is DOUBLE indemnity, meaning it is actually $694,773.33 in 2021. Is this possibly foreshadowing? Author's purpose could be to highlight issues surrounding money and motive.

This book has shown a lot of foreshadowing going on so far and I don’t think that it will stop anytime soon. This excerpt from the passage shows foreshadowing of what will soon happen. It is also a bit weird that Mr. Clutter would make a deal with somebody where he has to pay double the amount of money if this happens.
