Boko Haram is a militant Islamic group that habits the northern states of Nigeria. Muhammed Yusuf created the group in 2002, in Maiduguri, capital of Borno, Nigeria. In a CNN article on the group, it stated, "In the local Hausa dialect, Boko Haram means “Western education is forbidden.” The group also refers to itself as Jama’atu Ahlis Sunna Lidda’awati Wal-Jihad, meaning “People Committed to the Propagation of the Prophet’s Teachings and Jihad.”' (CNN Editorial Research, 2021). The goal of Boko Haram is to uproot the corruption and injustice in Nigeria, which it blamed on Western influences, and to impose Sharīʿah, or Islamic law.

In a short article on Boko Haram, it said, " Boko Haram, a violent Islamist insurgency, has terrorized communities around West Africa's Lake Chad Basin for years — creating new hardships and compounding existing ones for millions of people in northeast Nigeria, Cameroon, Chad, and Niger, many of them still displaced and struggling to survive," (UNICEF USA, 2021). In the beginning, Boko Haram had mainly attacked police, but that grew into villages of civilians. Children have been killed and abducted, while villages are burned down making resources scarce.

In 2015, Boko Haram pledged alliance with ISIS. From then on the violence has gotten worse with more deaths and kidnappings following. It is noted that since 2009, there have been nearly 350,000 deaths, and it is still increasing (Council on Foreign Relations, 2022). Nigerian troops have been fighting against this battle, but it still has not been enough to end this.

America has had conflict with ISIS for a long time, with the terrorist actions on America and the Afghanistan war. With them now associating with Boko Haram, it was stated that the US, " boosted its military assistance and deployed three hundred troops to Nigeria in an effort to help in the fight against Boko Haram", (Council on Foreign Relations, 2022). Nigeria's stability is important not only for the US economy, but mostly for the countries safety. America supports Nigeria's goals of having a democracy.

"Through U.S. assistance in Nigeria, the U.S. Government works to protect Americans from terrorism and disease, create opportunity for trade and investment, and support a more stable and prosperous country that is a partner in advancing our global priorities. Through U.S. foreign assistance, the U.S. Government is supporting Nigerian efforts to strengthen democratic institutions, promote good governance and counter corruption, and improve security while addressing the factors that drive conflict and providing life-saving assistance to those affected by terrorism.

I think it is so important that the United States is involved in helping the citizens of Nigeria fight against Boro Haram. America is a democracy and Nigeria wants to be that as well, so the US supports by defending and protecting against terrorist acts. It's salient that the US assists Nigeria in this time of need to create a stronger, safer, and better economy for the world.

American Citizens should be aware of this conflict going on in Nigeria so that they know whats going on in the world and see if there's a way that they can help/ be involve. The UNICEF USA delivers humanitarian aid to areas affected by conflict is extremely challenging. "Displacement camps tend to be overcrowded and host communities have little to offer to newcomers. UNICEF continues to work with partners across the region to identify and respond to urgent needs, connecting children and families with health care, nutrition, sources of safe water and protection services", (UNICEF, 2021). Citizens are able to donate to help those in need and are victims of the Boko Haram. With the support Nigeria is getting from the United States against Boko Haram, I do believe that they will eventually succeed. But unfortunately, it may take some time before that day comes.
