Her hair is first introduced when the narrator talks about the couple's most valuable possessions. For Jim, It was his watch, and for Della, it was her hair. This piece of symbolism is developed when Della only has $1.87 to buy a present for Jim the day before Christmas. 
However, she was willing to sacrifice her precious hair to pay for Jim's gift. This situation is concluded when she purchases a platinum fob chain with the money she had gotten from selling her hair. On Christmas day, Jim revealed that he had sold his watch to get her a set of combs.
