It represents the United States. But the famous Statue standing in New York Harbor was built in France. The statue was presented to the U.S., taken apart, shipped across the Atlantic Ocean in crates, and rebuilt in the U.S. It was France’s gift to the American people. For this reason the statue is turned to France.


It all started at dinner one night near Paris in 1865. They decided to build a monument to American freedom. At that dinner was the sculptor Frédéric-Auguste Bartholdi. He imagined a statue of a woman holding a torch burning with the light of freedom.
Bartholdi’s idea became reality after 21 years. French supporters raised money to build the statue, and Americans paid for the pedestal it would stand on. Finally, in 1886, the statue was finished.

Essa rappresenta gli Stati Uniti. Ma la famosa Statua situata nel porto di New York è stata costruita in Francia. La statua era stata presentata agli Stati Uniti, smontata, spedita attraverso l'oceano atlantico in casse e ricostruita negli Stati Uniti. Era un regalo della Francia per gli americani. Per questa ragione la statua è rivolta verso la Francia.


Tutto è partito a una cena, una sera vicino a Parigi nel 1865. Loro decisero di costruire un monumento per la libertà degli americani. A questa cena c'era anche lo scultore Frédéric-Auguste Bartholdi. Lui aveva immaginato una statua di una donna che reggeva una torcia con la luce della libertà. L'idea di Bartholdi divenne realtà dopo 21 anni. I francesi supportarono la costruzione della statua con dei fondi, e gli americani pagarono il piedistallo dove sarebbe stata su. 3) Dopo l'11 settembre, l’os­servatorio situato nella corona della Statua della Libertà è stato chiuso per 8 anni.

L’interno è quello più sorprendente, con uno scheletro reticolare in acciaio che fu poi rivestito da 300 fogli di rame; Eiffel utilizzò in seguito lo stesso progetto per realizzare la sua opera più famosa, la Torre Eiffel.
La statua è sorretta da un piedistallo,  alto poco più della statua, granitico di color grigio-rosa.

The interior is the most surprising, with a steel reticular skeleton that was then covered with 300 copper sheets; Eiffel later used the same project to create his most famous work, the Eiffel Tower.
The statue is supported by a gray-pink granite pedestal, slightly higher than the statue.
If in total the statue is 93 high, without the pedestal the sculpture measures “just” 46 meters, from this we can deduce and imagine the real height of the pedestal.
