The Acacallis Cyanea is a scarce and rare orchid that is only found in a region of the plains and Amazonia that Colombia shares with Brazil and Venezuela, it grows in forests with high temperatures and a very high degree of humidity, they are found on the edge of The rivers and their floods part of the plant is covered with water, with only its flowers standing out, from an epiphytic habitat (they are found on the branches of the trees). These characteristics make them in great danger of extinction, given that the lack of rains due to global warming made the phenomenon of floods so necessary for their subsistence increasingly rare, coupled with the cutting of forests and lack of shade. The inflorescence is approximately 30 cm long with bouquets of up to ten blue-violet flowers.

7. There can be up to 3 million seeds in a single orchid pod
However, you will never see them, they are the size of a speck of dust and are only visible under the microscope. Part of the reason for their small size is that they lack an endosperm and have no nutrients inside. They require contact with a particular fungus to germinate and grow - we found this fact particularly interesting!

8. It takes patience to grow an orchid
The first flowers of the plant will not appear until at least 5 to 7 years after germination. Houseplants found in stores are usually a decade old.

9. Some orchid flowers bloom for hours, while others last up to half a year
Phaleanopsis orchids are versatile enough to last in a cut flower arrangement longer than most.

In 1936, the Colombian Academy of History named the Acacallis Cyanea as the national emblem flower, which reaffirms its importance for the country. In addition, having 1,572 exclusive registered species of Colombia, means a great challenge and responsibility in front of their conversation.

Orchids are present in almost all ecosystems on the planet, except in regions with perpetual snow or in extremely desert environments.

The main threat to orchids is in the destruction of their natural ecosystems due to the deforestation of forests and the transformation of habitats, since this family of plants needs forest cover for their establishment and development. For example, a single tree in some places in Colombia can host more orchid species than an entire forest in a country with seasons.
By: Mariana Montoya
