Fiction Picture Book

Read on 9/4/18

Review- Clark the Shark is a great book for younger elementary kids. It features a character who is excited to read and do a book report, which kids do not see that in mainstream media enough.

Audience- 1st or 2nd grade. For kids who are still fairly new at reading and like more comical light books.

Teaching Point- If a kid is struggling to speak out loud or present, this could be a good book for them to read. I could also read this to my class and use it to say that it's okay to mess up when speaking.

Fiction Picture Book

Read on 9/6/2018

Review- I did not like this book because I went in to reading the book thinking it was the story of The Last Jedi, but it was just a list of characters, a brief synopsis of who they are, and how they relate to the story.

Audience- I would place this in a 1st or 2nd grade class, because it has a very simple vocabulary for those just learning to read. The only thing that might be difficult is some of the names. This book is good for kids who like aliens and sci-fi.

Teaching Points- This book could be used for learning how to describe different characters and how they contribute to a story.

Fiction Picture Book

Read on 9/6/2018

Review- I was pleasantly surprised by this book. I slightly judged a book on the cover when I realized that this book was about Native American culture. I didn't like the term "Turkey Girl," I thought it to be mocking Native American culture. But when I read this book, it was shocking how good it was. While, Turkey Girl is a mocking term, it was showing how the rich people around this turkey farm looked down upon her. I thought it was a great take on Cinderella.

Audience- 2nd or 3rd grade. I think any girls who like princesses who like this book.

Teaching Points- This is a good book for multicultural appreciation. I also think that it shows you to be nice to someone and to always be yourself.

There are several people who constantly run late and need that extra help. Also, there are people, like this book demonstrates, who try to juggle too much and end up needing help, like Splat the Cat.

Age- This book is good for kids in first grade, who are still learning to read and are reading short simple sentences.

Audience- Kids who like rhymes and humor, especially when people get hurt and fall down.

Teaching Point- I would use this book in a phonics lesson in rhyming. This book contains several examples of the "ah" sound.

She doesn't want to, but she likes hats and wants Nate to wear hats. This is a great book for kids to read, and if I teach this age group, I would have this in my class. It helps kids with rhyming words and has a good moral lesson as well. It teaches kids to be nice to their friends.

Audience/ Grade- This book is for kids in kindergarten or 1st grade. He gave them instructions, but they didn't know what to do. The Good Knight was watching them do crazy stuff with the cats. Finally he helped them read the instructions.

Grade/ Audience- I think the audience is younger elementary, like 1st grade.

Picture Book

Date Read- 8/31/18

Review- This book is beyond creative. Dr. Seuss uses his rhyming skills to teach such an important lesson:A person's a person no matter how small. Horton, the main character, repeats this over and over as he tries to save a speck of dust from crashing or drowning. Everyone judges him for it, but he keeps doing what is right. Ultimately, everyone realizes that Horton was right all along.

Grade/ Audience- Kindergarten, Kids who like rhyming and colourful animals.

Teaching Point- We should treat everyone the way we want to be treated.

Picture Book

Date Read- 10/7/18

Review- This book is a collection of several short stories by Dr. Seuss. I like it because the ever changing plots can help keep a kid focused, but could also be a downside because they might get lost in the book. They might not realize that the story has changed and their comprehension is effected. The first story is about Horton and the Kwuggerbug's quest to find the beezlenut tree. They face several daunting tasks, but in the end they are victorious (sort of).

Grade/ Audience- Younger elementary school. I feel like this was extreme for Captain Underpants.

Audience- This is for upper elementary school, such as 4th or 5th grade, because of the crude jokes in the book and the more advanced vocabulary.

Teaching Points- This book is an excellent example of how some books don't end the way the main characters want it to end. He faces various enemies, one of which is the Weeping Angel. When you look at them, they seem like a statue, but when you look away, they move so fast you can't even blink without them getting you. It is filled with engaging characters and an exciting plot. My favorite part is when Jack and Annie realize that a Tsunami is about to strike the Island and they have to race up to the highest point with the rest of the islanders.

Audience/ Grade- I think that this book is good for kids in 2nd grade or for kids who are just starting out in chapter books.

Teaching Point- For a literary lesson, you could teach about settings, because they transition from their present day to the past in Hawaii. There are also quick transitions between lower ground and higher ground. For a life teaching point, you could teach kids that in the event of tsunami, you need to get to higher ground.

I love Junie B as a character and think a lot of kids can relate to her, especially how scared she was to go on the bus for the first time.

Audience- I think this is a good book for a first grader. It has a really basic vocabulary and is short enough to be a good introduction into chapter books. This could be great for kids who might be nervous about going on the bus and also how to treat or friends in the same grade.

Teaching Points- This is a good introduction into chapter books for kids who are ready.

Early Chapter Book

Date Read- 10/5/18

Review- This book’s adventure is constantly engaging and interesting. It gives a fantastic perspective on the civil war and what it was like to be a nurse during that time. This book features how it was to be a slave during this time as well, mentioning that slaves were desperate enough to escape 30 miles barefoot to get to the north for freedom. This perspective is not mentioned enough in elementary school.

Audience/ Grade- I would use this in a 2nd or 3rd grade class, a younger grade where they are just starting chapter books. Because it is a topic about war, many boys would be interested in this book.

Teaching point- You can use this in a history lesson about the civil war. Knowing a good amount of history, I feel like it is an oversimplified version of what happened and with the relationships between the Europeans and the Native Americans. But, this book constructed a story based on history that gave it more of a story feel rather than a distant history, which I liked.

Audience/ Grade- I would use this book in an early elementary classroom, 2nd grade for example, for kids who are learning how to read chapter books while learning about the 1st Thanksgiving.

Teaching Point- A seasonal lesson on the First Thanksgiving.

Chapter Book

Award Winner

Date read- 9/9/18

Review- Charlotte’s Web is a timeless classic about a pig who befriends a spider. This book starts out with an exciting beginning when the farmer almost kills the pig because he is a runt, but he is stopped by his daughter. The rest of the book deals with the spider and the rest of the animals trying to save the pig’s life and the whole farm. This is a heart-warming story that is exciting and is filled with interpersonal relationships, while entirely fictional due to them being farm animals.

· Audience/Grade- This book is good for younger middle school, around 6th grade, because of its thickness and its fairly simple vocabulary. Would suggest this book for kids who like animals.

· Teaching Point- One lesson you can teach is characterization because of the growth of the characters and the vast differences in the characters of the story. For example, you can ask “what do you infer bout the girl in the first chapter and how she felt for the pig when her dad tried to kill it?”

Somebody's utopia will be someone else's dystopian society, and that is what we see depicted in this novel. The Giver also shows the power in youth when they have something to fight for. The main character, Jonas, has to fight the larger society in order to gain individualism and freedom through restoring the memories of the pre-dystopian society.

Audience/ Grade- I would use this text for approximately 8th grade. In today's society books are viewed by many as non essential, we spend less time in nature, watch excessive amounts of TV, and many people wear headphones constantly. These are several of the characteristic of the society in Fahrenheit 451, which was written in 1952. It was written by 13 different authors for that purpose. The book mentions in the foreword how diversity of the heroes in literature is limited. When you see a black boy as a good guy, he is normally the token black character used for comic release. In other words, not the main super hero. These authors set out to make sure that diversity is the main focus of this novel. As an anthology, this book is not one single story, but a collection of different stories put together.

Audience/ Grade- High School. I would promote this book to everyone. It's chapters are a count down until the biggest event of the book. For example, the first "Chapter" is called "136 days before." That is a method to draw you in to this book. It's about a boy name Miles, who is socially awkward and moves from Florida to Alabama to go to a high school that you live in. He meets his best friend, Colonel, and the girl of his dreams, Alaska. Alaska is a wild girl, who wants to have fun but is wicked smart.
