Soup kitchens are a great way to help those in need of food. By arranging and serving food to the poor, one can grow closer to God and others. Volunteering at a soup kitchen takes a kindness in one’s heart, and the satisfaction from seeing the person’s face after receiving the food is incredible.

All around the world, billions suffer from poverty and must live in unideal conditions. Nearly three billion people live in poverty, receiving less than $2.50 a day. Those who receive under $1.25 a day, classified as extreme poverty, equates to roughly 1.3 billion people worldwide. In fact, nearly a billion of those in poverty are children. According to UNICEF, “approximately 22,000 children each day” die due to poverty (DoSomething.org). Around 750,000 people lack the basic necessity of clean water, and about 2,300 people die each day because of it. Due to improper funds to afford the care they need, roughly two million children each year die to diseases such as pneumonia and diarrhea. Often seen as a necessity, electricity is abundant in American cities. However, worldwide, roughly a fourth of all people do not have access to electricity. Facts like these are disturbing to imagine, but are hard to relate to without proper first hand experiences.

There are thousands of methods to tackle poverty, and more specifically, world hunger. All the world needs is one way, one response, or one action from people to end extreme poverty. For example, donating a dollar a day to those in need would end poverty and, in effect, save millions to even billions of lives. It would greatly improve the world, and allow people to focus on God rather than attempting to obtain the basic necessities of life purely in order to survive. Another action one can do is to donate, volunteer, or to even start a soup kitchen. It does not have to be extravagant; even by simply starting a small stand in a populated area that collects food for the poor and then donates the food at the end of the week to a local food bank. From small actions, such as donating a few cents to a dollar a day, to large actions like starting a simple food kitchen, one can easily help to end world poverty.
