I think we all know that. It's not particularly groundbreaking that we shouldn't be using our cellphones all the time - we've all heard the PSAs, seen the studies, looked at the Facebook posts (ironic). The other point: it's impossible to enforce self-control - the sentiment itself is contradictory. There's no real way to teach self-control. Sure, there's methods of enforcing it, but the individual in question must have the control to use those methods. Therefore, in the end, it's just survival of the fittest; have self-control and prosper, or lack it and die. What's your op on that?

I think that many of us have heard "don't constantly look at your phone-its bad for you", we've seen plenty of studies proving how "smartphones will be our downfall" at least once in our lives. So if we know that our phones are bad for us, and we know that simply reducing phone use would solve this issue, why don't we do that? Why don't we put away our phones while doing work that we KNOW is either important, or requires more focus? I think that even though we all know what to do, what can prevent this from happening, we still decide to ignore it, and then we act surprised when we don't do well in the end. Why?

Even when we are successful in resisting urges, we could still have malicious effects on ourselves, just out of sheer habit. As phones impact us, even if we are unaware, subconsciously at the very least, our phones are always going to be on our minds.. "did he/she text me back?" "I need his/her answer on this issue," "how many likes did that last post get?" and many other questions are circling through our minds, 24/7. I know they are for me, and I'm sure they are for some of you at the very least. Society has put this weight on us and our digital footprint, making it seem like our entire lives revolve around our social media presence, pressurizing us. So my question to you is, how do we fix this? Besides just keeping the phones away physically, how do we mentally keep them away from us?

This is why your phone in another room is the best option for trying to perform tasks more effectively without getting distracted by your smartphone.

Most everyone in this world have become attracted to their phones, and are not able to spend even 10 minutes within a 1 foot radius of it. I completely agree with this because when your smartphone is near you, you are aware of its presence, thus constantly thinking about what may be going on in its world. Additionally, today, having multiple followers on social media make you "cool", which everyone wants to be classified as. Due to this reason, people use their phone; to compare their lives to others, to "increase popularity". My question is, how do we erase this want? How can we keep ourselves away from this want of "coolness? Is this the only reason we are so addicted to our phones?

"When our smartphones aren't directly necessary, and when being fully cognitively available is important, setting aside a period of time to put them away...can be quite valuable."

This statement comes with the idea that planning eliminates distraction. Planning the day is a strategy used ATTEMPTING (emphasis on attempting) to stay more organized and complete tasks on time. However, if you were to write "Phone Time" from 3-4 PM in your agenda, wouldn't you be looking forward to that point in the day during your other activities? You'll feel like every other task you have planned is a chore, and that time slot from 3-4 PM is your reward. And you know about it, so what will stop you from thinking about it? Once that thought makes its way into your brain, that's all you'll be thinking about throughout the day, about how excited you are that you'll finally get to use your phone (that is, if you actually stick to your plan). The same way that "when we are successful at resisting the urge to attend to our smartphones, we may actually be undermining our own cognitive performance", the thought of getting to use your phone will distract you from thinking about what is necessary for you to think about to complete your current task.
