After Macbeth became king, Banquo was very suspicious of him. Macbeth at this point had it all; King, Cawdor, and Glamis as Banquo said. Banquo even thought about how this is all exactly what the three witches had said in their prophecies, making him even more suspicious about how Macbeth got all the titles.

This ties into the theme of appearance vs. reality. On the outside, Macbeth appears to be an honorable king that has done no harm, but on the inside, he hides his dark secret of killing Duncan, which is someone who is far from honorable. This is what Banquo is trying to figure out: is Macbeth really who he says he is?

But to be safely thus.

Macbeth has become king but not in the right way. He had to kill Duncan to get to this position and now people are starting to question Macbeth. He than says to himself if I am not safe than being king means nothing. Meaning that being safe is much better than being king unsafely.

This ties into the theme of ambition. Macbeths power is driven by his own ambition. When he realizes he is not in safety, meaning he could lose his position, he is not at peace with just having the throne, but he is now afraid of losing it. His ambition is not fulfilled when he realizes he could lose the throne and he will continue to have to keep using his ambition to keep it.

When Macbeth enters the room, Lady Macbeth knows he has been thinking about the murder of Duncan and others being suspicious of him. She comforts Macbeth and tells him, what's done is done and there's nothing he can do about it now other than keep moving forward.

This ties into the theme of ambition. Lady Macbeth essentially tells Macbeth to move on from the murder of Duncan and stay focused. Showing their ambition to keep moving forward and showing how it's driving them to suppress the guilt and push onward.

Thou mayst revenge. O slave!

(3. 3. 17-18)

When the three murderers snuck up on Banquo, they let his son escape. As Banquo is dying he tells his son to run away and get his revenge for him.

This ties into the theme of fate and nature vs. unnatural. Macbeth tries to fight against the witches' prophecy that Banquo's ancestors would be heirs to the throne and has him killed in an unnatural way.

Third murderer: 'Tis he.

First murderer: Stand to 't.

Banquo: It will be rain to-night.

First murderer: Let it come down.

(they attack Banquo)

(3. 3. 14-16)

Macbeth sent three murderers to kill Banquo and his son due to his suspicions of Macbeth. Also the witches prophesized that Banquo's ancestors would be heirs to the throne and Macbeth thought: what's the point of being king if my sons won't inherit it, so he also wanted to have his son killed. The murderers see Banquo and his son in the forest and that's when they sneak up on him and kill him.

This ties into the theme of violence. The three murderers were very violent in killing Banquo leaving him in a ditch with twenty gashes on his head.

Lords: What, my good lord?

Macbeth: (to ghost) Thou canst not say I did it: never shake

Thy gory locks at me.

(3. 4. 49-51)

Macbeth had sent the murderers to kill Banquo. As he is hosting his feast with many lords, Banquo appears to him as a ghost. Macbeth essentially says to the ghost of Banquo: you cannot say i did it, don't shake your bloody head at me. Macbeth says this out loud in front of the lords which makes them think he is unwell.

This ties into the theme of nature vs. unnatural, as ghosts don't exist in real life and they don't appear to us. This was a very unnatural act.

To trade and traffic with Macbeth

In riddles and affairs of death;

And I, the mistress of your charms,

The close contriver of all harms,

Wad never called to bear my part.

(3. 5. 1-8)

When Hecate discovered that the three sisters had told Macbeth and Banquo prophecies without her and her permission she was not happy with them. She said that this isn't something to mess around with without her permission. She then told them to meet her the next day where they would see Macbeth again and she would makes things more "interesting" this time when he asked to know more prophecies.

This ties into the theme of nature vs. unnatural because witches and telling the future/ prophecies are very unnatural things in this world.

His message ere he come, that a swift blessing

May soon return to this our suffering country

Under a hand accurs'd!

(3. 6. 46-49)

Lennox is also suspicious of Macbeth and believes that his power come unnaturally and believes that the country is at risk. He is going to try and get Macduff to come back and reclaim his throne so that Macbeth is no longer king.

This can tie into the theme of nature vs unnatural. Lennox realizes that Macbeths rise to power was accomplished unnaturally, including murder. He thinks that the country is at risk due to Macbeth and hopes that Macduff comes home and reclaims the throne as it was supposed to be.

Whose absence is no less material to me

Then to his father's, must embrace the fate

Of that dark hour.

(3. 1. 134-138)

Macbeth wants Banquo and his son dead but doesn't want to kill them. He convinces the murderers that Banquo is the reason why their lives are miserable. The murderers believe him, they also take into consideration that their lives can't get worse, so what's the harm in killing Banquo and his son. The murderers agree to kill Banquo and his son later that night.

This ties into the theme of violence as the murderers are willing to kill Banquo and his son at any cost. This act is very violent and not right.
