the incomparable drawings of GEORGE SEURAT

FIRST, take some time to browse Seurat’s SKETCHBOOKS (at the MOMA website).

CHOOSE 2 DRAWINGS to work with. (from that website, or your own research).

THIRD, SHARPEN YOUR CRAYON (or some other waxy medium) and use it to create 1 DETAILED thumbnail of each drawing – 2 total.

POST BOTH of your sketches, along with THE ORIGINAL work and two sentences about the process for you.

Remember:

Your subject here is largely VALUE. Notice his slow buildup of color.

Work a bit larger than your other thumbnails this time.

Seurat is working in conté crayon on textured paper, so you also will use crayon or some other media. If you don't have crayon, try ballpoint pen. Sharpen your crayon (just as you would a pencil), for maximum control!

Slowly build value by using small circular motions, working from light to dark.

nice work Megan -- glad you tried two different media (drawing tools) to see which worked better for you. And you kept it simple, which is great.
In the case of the portrait, squinting is so helpful -- when I squint for example I notice that his beard and jacket just blend into one another -- there's no separation, or line. So you could push the darks further, which will then make the light more prominent and clear.
Secondly, a drawing note -- if you draw a vertical line from his right (our left) eyebrow down on the original, you'll see that his cheekbone is to the right of that, and his beard even more to the right. In your sketch, they are lined up, which makes him look more upright than in the original. Which, incidentally, isn't a drawing BY Seurat, it's a portrait OF Seurat, by Ernest Joseph Laurent.

I agree with your comments Whitley -- you did a nice job mimicking the texture of the image. For the black and white image, you can see by squinting that the building behind the tower is much darker than you have it -- in fact, you could hold up one of your value scales for comparison. By making that even darker the moon will have more impact. Good effort!

challenging, aren't they? It would help if you work a bit larger and make sure that your drawing tool is well-sharpened. Also, try using small round circles rather than a back-and-forth motion (unless it's clear that Seurat did that in the original).
In both cases, particularly the second, you could also work more slowly and spend a bit more time on them -- they seem a bit quick.

yes, this is a challenging approach, and it really doesn't work as well with pencil as it does with something more waxy and crayon-like. however, it's certainly possible -- in this case, your drawings are both too quick and too small.
three things you could change:
work slowly; work slightly larger; and draw the borders of your sketch yourself, NOT using the paper edge for a border. as I've said before, you should clarify the borders yourself, rather than using the edges of your paper, because if you don't you're missing the aspect of composition we're trying to study.
try again with these 3 tips and see if that helps!

It's not easy, I know -- and gives us some appreciation for all the different kinds of lines artists use and the work and planning that may go into a seemingly simple drawing. As Isabella noted, yours is an interpretation, and sometimes we discover new ideas this way, which can be exciting!
Seurat shows us the beauty of simplicity, how much can be expressed in a simple shape, and also texture. You'll notice in his originals too how the texture of the paper really affects the final outcome. Nice effort!

You've made a nice effort here, Isabella -- it's definitely challenging. Pay close attention to line direction; in the second drawing he's just using small circular movements rather than back-and-forth lines, however small. Also just on a drawing note, for the "Night Stroll" drawing, if you were to draw a vertical line straight down from the back of the woman's head you'll see it almost lines up with her derrière, which means that her back is much more arched and gives her that upright posture. Vertical and horizontal alignment lines are really useful for checking our drawings. keep it up!

great little drawings! I like that you chose two such different drawings to work with, one with the figure and the other more geometric with the building. I agree a bit with Megan that you could push the darks just a little bit further, but overall you've observed really well. You could even try to work just a bit bigger. Perhaps you've found your medium! well done.
