Rene Magritte makes use of contrasting colours in Personal Values. He emphasises the objects by using complimentary colours. He made the walls of the room a light blue colour while objects like the comb, cupboard and bed different shades of orange-brown. He also makes the wine glass a dark blueish green and a the bar of soap a light orange. On top of this, he makes the matchstick pink. The contrasting colours make the different objects stand out.

Rene Magritte also uses texture to bring out the different objects, making the cupboard bed and floor different wooden textures, and putting a smooth shiny blue glass in the middle of the wooden textured objects.

The setting of this artwork is in a room but the wallpaper is a sky. His intention is to blurs the line between the reality and imagination. The artwork show how its unbounded by its physical limits as is human imagination.

The wallpaper acts as an optical illusion to the viewer.

This makes the viewers question the definition of the painting as it is familiar yet strange at the same time. The exaggeration of the size of certain objects, which one will find familiar becomes unfamiliar and the normal becomes strange.

Rene Magritte is known for Surrealism; creating works that depicts illogical and dream-like scenes.

It’s a 4-sided room with an off-white ceiling with a few cracks at its top left corner. It has walls which are light cobalt blue with realistic white clouds. The floor has a vertical wooden plank pattern with 2 dark red persian rugs closer to the POV. There’s a simple bed not on the rugs and in the left corner horizontally with wooden frames, plain white sheets under the brown blankets, and 2 white pillows neatly placed beside each other. On the bed, there is a big brown fine-tooth comb standing upwards and leaning against the corners of the walls, almost reaching the start of the ceiling. On the rug, in the bottom left middle of the canvas, there is a large light pink matchstick which is half of the bed’s length with a yellow end. Beside it, to the right and nearer to the head, is a teal, transluscent, child-like wine cup which is half the height of the walls. Right beside that cup is a large, salmon, circular bar of soap that’s the size of the closet right behind it. All three items, the matchstick, cup, and soap, are on the rugs. There’s wooden, brown, rectangular, closet with two mirrors on each of its two doors at the back right of the room, having a small space between it and the wall. The mirrors have reflect an open window with brownish-orange and white curtains that’s the main light source of the room and also reflects the bar of soap, a bit of the carpet, the wooden floor, the other side of the blue sky walls. On top of the closet is a large brown shaving brush with silver details on its handle that goes slightly over the edge of the closet.

The Human Condition consists of a dull, warm coloured room in which where the window view, which in contrast to the room has very bright and cool colours, seems to be the main subject. However, majority of the view outside of the window is covered by an easel with a mere painting of the view.

This painting in a painting means to convey the perception of the human eye, in which where we assume that the painting on the easel relays the image behind the canvas, even though we have no concrete evidence that the picture is even accurate to the view behind. It reflects the way that humans may tend to assume opinions the same way we assume the view behind the easel, and how we do so in order to make our reality more comfortable for us to comprehend.

The logo makes use of shapes in a simple yet effective way to catch one’s attention - a rectangular parcel tied with a bow stuck on top of a medieval shield with the brand name taking up the space inside the shield. Rand used only lines to emphasise on the text UPS, which is the company’s name. The shield was used in order to signify the company’s stability and integrity - that they would deliver your parcels safely. The bow adorning the box slightly above the shield represents the company’s customer service. The 1961 version was colourless, a simple black contour on a white background. The 1990 version, on the other hand is in a golden contour against a brown background. The brown used was intended to remind people of parcels and stay true to their brand - as they are a parcel delivery company. The gold letters meant to evoke a sense of reliability and to represent their proud nature and long history.

The artwork is about a reflection of frida kahlo’s identity, deeply rooted in her family heritage. The painting depicts a symbolic family tree, with her grandparents in the sky, her parents in the center, and Frida as a young child at the bottom. Red ribbons connect the generations, symbolizing the continuity of life and heritage. Through this composition, Kahlo expresses the blend of her European and Mexican ancestry, emphasising how these diverse cultural backgrounds have shaped her personal identity. The inclusion of her childhood home and the natural landscape further ties her identity to her roots and upbringing. This artwork shows Kahlo's exploration of identity, illustrating how her family history and cultural heritage are integral to her sense of self.

It depicts a colorful skyline with a large Mexican flag hanging on the right, while Frida's iconic Tehuana-style dress hangs limply from a clothesline. The artwork itself is filled with symbolic imagery, including a pre-Columbian statue, a gas mask, and a mirror reflecting a distorted image of the viewer. The painting is a powerful commentary on Kahlo's complex relationship with her Mexican identity, her struggles with physical and emotional pain, and her political beliefs.

"My Dress Hangs There" is a compelling piece by Frida Kahlo, showcasing her unique blend of surrealism and social commentary. Created in 1933 during her time in the United States, the painting reflects Kahlo's reaction to American consumer culture and societal norms. Influenced by her tumultuous personal life and political beliefs, Kahlo used her art to challenge traditional gender roles and explore themes of identity and autonomy. In this particular piece, she juxtaposes symbols of American capitalism with elements of Mexican culture, offering a critique of both societies. The dress, a symbol of femininity and domesticity, hangs empty, suggesting a rejection of conventional gender roles. The American flag serves as a backdrop, symbolizing patriotism and nationalism, while the factory smokestacks allude to industrialization and environmental degradation. Through "My Dress Hangs There," Kahlo invites viewers to contemplate the complexities of modern life and the tension between individual expression and societal expectations.

The Seed Cathedral is a large, transparent structure with a geodesic dome shape. It appears as a massive crystalline structure and is often compared to a seed or flower. The structure looks like a dandelion but squarish in shape. The cathedral is made of 60,000 slender optic fibre rods. The rods creates a dense, net-like shell. It is also coated with a reflective material to interact dynamically with light. Each optic fibre contains seed from 1 of 250 different plant species. In the day, natural light filters through the translucent rods, creating a soft, ethereal glow. At night, the structure is illuminated by internal lighting, making the pavilion appear to glow from within.

There is a mess of houses on a 2D plane— showed through the contrast of the black roofs and the white background. Theres an abstraction in its simplicity as seen through the white walls of the houses being blended into the background. This thus allows for the audience to use their own instinctive imagination to easily see the shape of the houses with only the black roofs and black windows. There are also various sizes and shapes to the buildings which show perspective. The main focal point, the middle, is the most detailed as the houses nearing the top and bottom of canvas turn into different shades of grey rectangles that represent the houses at their most simplified form. This then shows perspective in the piece as the middle, the more focused area, then draws the viewer’s attention towards the centre part of the work. There are also small pops of the colours yellow, green, and pink- which stand out from and contrasts to the painting’s monochromatic palette.

The sculpture portrays a young girl from the Batak tribe of Sumatra, Indonesia. The figure is depicted in a seated position, her legs tucked underneath her body, and her arms wrapped protectively around her knees. Her posture conveys a sense of vulnerability and introspection, yet there is also a quiet strength and resilience in her pose.

Ng Eng Teng’s distinctive style comes through in the simplified yet evocative form of the figure. The girl’s head is slightly oversized compared to the rest of her body, a technique Ng often used to emphasize emotion and personality. Her facial features are soft but expressive, with large, downcast eyes that seem to carry a quiet sadness or contemplation. Her hair is styled simply, typical of a young village girl, and her attire is minimal, capturing her modest background.

The surface of the bronze has a textured, almost rough quality, which adds depth to the figure and emphasizes the organic, raw feeling of the sculpture. This texture also reflects Ng’s focus on creating works that feel “lived-in,” with the imperfections of the human condition.

The overall mood of “Batak Girl” is one of melancholic beauty. It reflects Ng’s sensitivity to the human experience, especially in portraying marginalized or underrepresented communities, such as the Batak people. By capturing the essence of a young girl from a distant, traditional culture, Ng Eng Teng invites viewers to connect emotionally with the figure, prompting thoughts about cultural identity, poverty, and the universality of human emotions.

The large, round head contrasts with the smaller, more slender neck.

Color: The bronze material naturally gives the sculpture a monochromatic color palette.

Influence

While Ng Eng Teng was not overtly political in his statements, his focus on marginalized individuals often carried a subtle critique of social inequalities. By highlighting the inner world of the Batak girl, Ng was making a statement about the dignity and resilience of those who are often overlooked by society.

In a broader sense, “Batak Girl” could be seen as a commentary on the effects of poverty, cultural marginalization, and the universality of human suffering. Ng’s ability to convey empathy through his simplified forms, particularly in his depictions of women and children, speaks to his commitment to addressing these social themes in a subtle, emotional way.

Context

In “Batak Girl”, Ng Eng Teng draws on his humanistic vision, global influences, and empathy for marginalized communities to create a sculpture that is both personal and universal. By focusing on a young girl from the Batak tribe, Ng highlights the challenges faced by indigenous and impoverished communities in Southeast Asia while also inviting the viewer to connect with the girl’s emotional depth and inner world. The sculpture is a testament to Ng’s ability to blend cultural specificity with universal themes of vulnerability, dignity, and resilience.

Background

Ng’s sculptures often revolve around universal human themes—vulnerability, suffering, resilience, and emotion. He had a profound empathy for the marginalized and the disenfranchised, which is reflected in many of his works, including “Batak Girl”.

His focus on the common, everyday person, particularly women and children from impoverished or underrepresented communities, aligns with his broader humanistic vision. By emphasizing the emotional states of his subjects, Ng invites viewers to reflect on their shared humanity, regardless of cultural or economic differences.
