According to Dansby, et al. (1996), as cited in Dollarhide & Saginak (2017), group counseling involves primary intervention and has a therapeutic focus. The purpose is to give participants the forum to learn about themselves, other people, life tasks, and authentic ways of relating in a safe, confidential setting. These groups can either be structured or processed. The video below is a great conversation starter to use in a structured group counseling session with elementary students. It demonstrates the process of self-movement from angry to calm and encourages children to explore elements of their own behaviors without feeling singled-out or labeled. It's fun and engaging.
