Learning Analytics can vastly improve student learning by customizing their learning experiences according to their needs. So for instance if the student has exhibited that he/she has a firm grasp on the current topic, the next logical topic that should follow can be introduced. on the other hand, if the student has exhibited gaps in learning, then the system can use this information to provide knowledge that can cover these information gaps.

At a granular level, it allows us monitor data such as number of course visits or resource views, time spent in each course, time spent in each activity, how often they returned to a specific course and so on. We can then analyze these trends across courses/topics/learners to identify patterns and use that type of information to customize course offerings and design and even identify appropriate intervention options.

I can see myself personally using analytics via the organization LMS. I know the LMS collects data such as course completion rates, course progress and we often run reports on these to analyse completion trends and identify stragglers who have gone past the due date for completion. Stragglers are always identified after the fact, i.e. after they have passed the course completion due date. I would be interested in analyzing data to see if we could identify these stragglers before their deadline lapse and create interventions to help them complete their training on time. I would also find out if the LMS can collect granular course data such time spent in each course activity, how many times the person returned to a specific module, how long a person took to complete a specific activity. This could potentially help me identify what modules are ineffective and require design modifications in order facilitate a better learning experience. I would also use learning analytics to find out the rate of assessment completions and the accompanying trends (for what type of courses are learners most likely to complete an assessment, does completion rate depend on the learner group/roles etc.)
